Q
I am beginning to put into practice your mind power techniques along with Deepak Chopra's Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. I find the two, your book and his, go well together. Anyway, I have a concern in visualizing my goal — am I putting in too much detail? My passion and goal is to get consistent, professional, paid acting and voice animation work (though I am a professional actor, work has been slow for me the last six months — my last acting job was in September 1999). I see myself doing both these things (see myself on set or in the studio), and then I also sometimes get details of things like the director saying “The Producers loved your work yesterday,” or “We’ll see you tomorrow for scene.” Is this too much?
Also I visualize my bank balance being quite high, as financial freedom is a personal goal of mine (I am eager to break free from poverty consciousness). I also visualize myself on a trip I want to take in the fall to Hawaii for a workshop.
So I have no problem seeing many details, hearing words said to me, feeling all the feelings (seeding), but I am concerned that I am asking for too much and evoking too much detail. Should I be focusing on “a successful acting career” and trust that financial freedom and details and being able to afford the trip will all come, or can I stick with the details? I should add that I love the details and I feel fantastic when I am doing the visualizing. And then when I am done my 5-10 minutes, I let it go and move through my day staying open and present minded. I appreciate your help with this. I am just a grasshopper in these new Mind Power Techniques.

There are two points that I wish to address in your questions. First of all, the aspect of details: What you're doing is absolutely right. You must put in as much detail as possible, seeing and feeling yourself having and being what it is that you want. Also, it’s a good idea to vary the details so that the mind does not become sluggish and lazy. The mind likes variety. So regarding this aspect of your question, I think you're doing everything right.
In answer to the second part of your question, let me say that there’s an old maxim: “You crawl before you walk, and you walk before you run.” One of the mistakes that people make when they first begin to work with mind powers is that they try to do everything all at once. You cannot have twenty-five goals working with mind powers. If you try to work on too many things simultaneously, especially at the beginning stages, what happens is that you just disperse your energy. Better to pick two or three things that are very important to you and begin working on them. And then when you achieve them you can work on other things as well. You're not limited to just one goal. And by all means, you want to work on many things simultaneously, but really you have to prioritize and make decisions. Pick the things that are most important to you. Work on them first.

I’ve read most of your book Mind Power so far. I have read many of these books and though I haven’t had much chance to practice it yet, it has already made me feel happier and less tired. But I have been nagged with some questions about this “your thoughts create reality” thing. With Mind Power, can you, for example, affect other people negatively? If you can even affect other people positively by making them, for example, like you and eventually date you, wouldn’t that be kind of unfair because you would be controlling their path in life? And what happens if they wouldn’t otherwise have liked you; you would be kind of forcing them to like you?

You cannot control other people with mind powers. What you can do with mind powers is change the energy and vibration that emits from you. When you change your energy and vibration, then that changes people’s reaction to you. When you change, the whole world changes. Everything changes when you change your thoughts, beliefs, emotions and feelings.
So it's not a matter of forcing people or repelling people; it's a matter of working with energy and vibrations by which you change your reality. People will either like you or dislike you according to who you are, and who you are has to do with what you think, what you feel, what you believe, and what you do. Mind Powers is a system of changing yourself, and in changing yourself, you change everything.
Q Can mind power be applied to external circumstances, other people, their behaviour or situation other than yourself? Say if, a relative or a friend is in a coma or terminal illness, can you apply YOUR Mind Power to turn around his/her situation? Have you come across testimonies of successful application of the above among your students?
Singapore
A
This is not an easy question to answer. Ultimately each person has their own destiny, and that has everything to do with their energy and vibration. Can we help other people? Certainly there is enough evidence to prove that prayer and love and concern can indeed help another individual. So what I would suggest is if you have a relative or friend who has a terminal illness, spend time each day using your mind power to help and assist them. We are in a grey area here, where there is not a clear-cut answer on what works and what doesn’t. But it certainly won’t hurt, and the energy of love and concern from friends and family is always of assistance to an individual.
You might be interested in a recent success story from another e-mail correspondent:
“A personal story of one of my associates might interest you. Her son was involved in a head-on car crash just over a week ago. While he was under intensive care and unconscious, she whispered in his ear every hour a positive affirmation: "In every way, every day, my body is healing, my bones are growing back together, and I am getting better and better." When he awoke, he looked at his Mom, who asked how he was feeling. He first asked her where she had been, and she told him that she had been there with him the whole time. Then, in response to the question of how he was feeling, he looked at his mom and told her he would be fine because... and he repeated to her nearly word for word the affirmation she had been whispering in his ear while he was unconscious. She was shocked. The doctors say he is recovering nicely, will be walking again in 6 months, and they sent him home to begin his rehabilitation this week.”

I have read most of your books over the years and recently went on holiday and took along A Vision of Power and Glory. I read it when I bought it, but didn't understand it at the time. I somehow “knew” it was a book I needed to read during my holiday. It really “spoke” to me this time. The book has made me realise how there is another me I want to find out more about. Thank you John, I am looking forward to your visit here next year.
My question. I have been practising TM sporadically for many years but much more regularly lately to de-stress myself. Should I stop that and use my meditation time to practice Mind Power visualisations, or should I keep up both? Another question: Joe Karbo's book was emphatic that you should only use visualisation techniques for “attributes” and not material things — he used affirmations for material things. I cannot be sure from your books if you agree. Could you advise me?
Auckland, New Zealand
A
Regarding TM, any meditation that you use will be valuable for you, as it will help to both strengthen and relax the mind. TM certainly is a well-recognized meditation technique and can be done along with mind power visualization.
Secondly, you mention Joe Karbo's book. I'm not familiar with this particular book, but let me assure you that you can use affirmations for whatever you want, and I emphasize the word “whatever,” whether it’s attributes or whether it’s material things. There is no limit to the areas in which you can use affirmations.
Q
I discovered your book Mind Power by accident, trying to find something in my partner’s drawer. I believe everything happens for a reason. I’m very motivated by your mind exercises, but deep inside of myself, I still don't know what I really want to do. I think about thousands of ideas and opportunities, but after awhile I just can’t get excited enough to move on.
Your book brought me a lot of confidence, I have been practicing the exercises, but my question is: Do you really think that my positive thinking can bring me the answers and opportunities I'm looking for, even knowing that right now I don’t have any idea about what I want to do to be successful in life?
Los Angeles
A
You're not the only person who has no idea about what they want to do to be successful in life. Knowing and understanding what is appropriate for us is quite often one of the most difficult questions that we will have to answer. I refer you to my past topic of the month, Follow the Call.
One thing that you can be quite grateful for is that we all have a subconscious mind, and within our subconscious mind lie the answers to everything that we require in life, including what paths we need to take - which are appropriate for us, which would be more fun, which would be more valuable. All these things exist for us in the subconscious mind. When you begin working with mind powers, you will access this power. It will not come immediately. It will come bit by bit. But the pieces will all fit together when you trust life and when you move courageously towards the things of your dreams, working with mind power principles.
Q
I think I should just mention that I'm one of the lucky people in South Africa who has met you personally, in Cape Town Waterfront, when you were promoting your new book The Practice of Happiness. You donated your books to a black women's book club that I was heading then. I now live in California and have achieved most of the dreams and goals I had prior to meeting you and reading your books. Mind Power and Practice helped me through!
My problem is that since I have been here, I have frozen over. I cannot get myself to do the organizational work that I love so much. I am scared of the quality of people I see around me, I feel very dominated, and I'm scared I’m getting stagnated. My outgoing personality has instead given birth to bad moods with a lot of frustration. It is a totally different world and I don’t feel needed here like back home. My problem is that I cannot go back home either, because I am now married and my kids love their new life here.

I know it is frustrating when you go to a new country and you don't have the same friends and you have to start your life all over again. While in South Africa you had many friends and many activities and you did great work; now you find yourself in a totally new situation. This can be very frustrating.
However, you do have mind powers and, as you indicated in your e-mail to me, you have used it very successfully. So you do know that it works. What you need to do is to start a new program of mind powers, attracting to you interesting people and circumstances and situations that will fulfill your new life. You must be patient when there is a transition in your life. Whenever there is a transition as large as the one you're going through, there is always an overlapping period of both uncertainty and confusion. This is to be expected. Don't panic. Don't get overwhelmed by it. Allow your new life to settle in and, working with mind powers, you will find great people and many important activities that can use a talented person such as yourself.
Q
I have set myself high goals and some intermediate goals leading up to the bigger goals, and I have been very religious in doing the exercises without missing a day for about a year. Yes, I have seen changes, but some of the changes seem strange, like I find myself setting weekly goals, like making my bed every day and washing the dishes, as normally I am an untidy person. The other thing is I’m not a punctual person, but all of a sudden it has become an obsession to be on time, and on a weekly basis I chart myself. Accordingly, would you say this is the subconscious’s way of preparing me for my goals?
The other question is, is it true that the longer the left the bigger the right? What I mean is, when you do the exercises for a long time with hardly any results, when you do start seeing results, are they normally big?
And my last question relates to one of my goals which was that my back would be healed of a slipped disc which the doctors said I would have to have an operation on. Well, now one year down the line, my back is 99% healed, but what was strange is that it got far worse before it got better. Now I’m going through the same with my finances, as one of my goals is money, but unexpected costs keep arising. I must be honest, I truly have not lost faith, as I know this is circumstance and inner controls the outer, but is there some sort of explanation for all this?
South Africa
A Congratulations on your changes, some of them small and some of them large. It sounds like you are working well with mind powers. You’re absolutely right that sometimes things do get worse before they get better. The reason for this is simple. Because of the energy and vibration that we have built up in the past, we need to have these experiences in our life before we can move on to new ones. So just continue with your exercises and you will soon be doing fine.
Q
Do you think it would be possible to win the lottery using Mind Powers? Have you heard of or know anyone using Mind Power related ideas to win a multimillion-dollar jackpot? Do you have any thoughts on this, and any suggestions on manifesting an occurrence?
Virginia, USA
A
It certainly is possible to use mind power to win the lottery. However, it’s also possible to find a needle in a haystack. I always tell people that it is probably the worst thing to try to work on using mind powers because the odds against winning the lottery are so high, plus you have literally millions of other people putting energy and thoughts into also winning the lottery. It would be far better for you to work on abundance coming to you and let the universe decide in which way it is going to unfold for you.
Having said this, I have had past students report to me that they have won lotteries. However, whether this is due to mind power or simply coincidence, I'm not sure. But I do know that working for abundance and on vibrations of abundance, following the techniques in my books and tapes, will serve you far better in the long run than simply focusing on the lottery.
