Q I have the virus condition called herpes and would like to know if there is a positive affirmation you could help me with to eliminate it?
A
There is an affirmation that works well for all physical ailments. "Every day in every way I'm getting better and better." This affirmation was originally created by Emile Coué, a French physician who founded healing clinics all over Europe and North America around the turn of the 20th century. He found that this affirmation used along with regular medical treatment, helped cure many people.
Interestingly enough, almost 100 hundred years later John Lennon, who obviously was familiar with his material, taught this to his son Sean in the song, "Beautiful Boy". His lyrics are "Before you go to sleep, say a little prayer. Every day, in every way it's getting better and better."
I like this affirmation because it is gentle and easy to say and believe.
Q
I am constantly feeling depressed, moody and grumpy. I feel as though there is no future. How can I use mind power to sort this out? Please help; I'm so miserable.
Zimbabwe
A
There is an exercise that I sometimes give to my students to help them observe their thoughts. For one week, several times a day, ask yourself these two questions: "How am I feeling? What am I thinking?" After each question, you provide the answer.
By doing this for a week you invariably come to the realization that how you feel is directly related to what you are thinking.
If, as you stated, you are constantly feeling depressed, moody and grumpy, then look within and discover the thoughts that are creating these feelings. Your misery has nothing to do with your circumstances, and everything to do with the thoughts you choose to indulge in. Don't let negative thoughts ruin your life. Take a stand and begin using Mind Power to change your thoughts. Find things to be happy about and grateful for. Give yourself a five or ten minute burst of positive thoughts each morning as you rise, and each evening before you go to sleep. As you change your thoughts about yourself and life, your moods and feelings will change correspondingly.
Q
I read your book Mind Power and I think it's wonderful. My question is: How can I change or improve somebody else's circumstances (health, finances) just by the way I think?
Kingston, Ontario, Canada
A Each of us has our own vibration of energy, and each of us is responsible for the circumstances that surround our lives. Using Mind Power gives us an incredible tool to change and improve our life. However, to change someone else's life is another matter altogether. Ultimately each person must change him or herself. You cannot help another individual unless they choose to help themselves. Having said that, nothing is stopping you from assisting them by holding in your mind the circumstances you wish to see for them. If the individual desires change and works with Mind Power, the added benefit of your assistance can and will help, but always it starts with the individual.
Q
When I was small, my only wish was to travel and see the world. Looking back, the odds were certainly stacked against me. However, I succeeded in doing what I wanted to do because the urge was so strong - it was all I thought about day in and day out. I traveled nonstop for 12 years, getting it all out my system. That was 10 years ago. I now have a family and most of the time feel happy with my lot. However, my worry is, will I ever have that feeling again of really wanting to do something and just doing it, for years and years? Now when I ask myself what it is I would like to do, the answer is the same, a blank mind! Please help me with this one, as I so desperately want to feel a raw passion in my life once again.

Your thoughts as a child propelled you into a life that allowed you to travel for twelve years. I'm sure you look back at that time with fond memories. Now, ten years later, you have a family and a new life. This brings joys and responsibilities. Your concern about finding the "raw passion in my life once again," is a concern that is common with parents at different stages of fulfilling their parental duties. Especially in your case, as you had an incredibly exciting twelve years of traveling. However, you have no need for concern. Those feelings can and will return.
Each stage of our life brings new opportunities. Go within and ask your subconscious mind to guide you. One can find passion in one's life without traveling the world. Trying to replicate your previous lifestyle is not possible or appropriate at this stage. However, something else is appropriate. What is it? I don't know. But if you practice the exercises explained in the chapter The Subconscious Mind and trust your intuition, you will be led to it.
Q
How do I train myself to get rid of the jealousy I feel towards my sister? It's making me sick inside. I'm jealous because she has a fantastic job, air hostess, with a fantastic company and flies all over the world. She's doing everything I want to do. I'm married, in a paper-shuffling job I hate, and always feeling bad about myself. I know that frustration and jealousy are such a waste of emotion, yet I can't seem to do anything about it. She's 7 years younger (23) than I am, and I feel my chance has passed. All I can do now is make the best of my situation and have kids, which I'm not sure I want, but my husband wants.

First of all let me congratulate you on your wisdom in realizing that your jealousy is making you "sick inside." This is an important realization. Not only that, but your jealousy also causes frustration with yourself and brings with it a host of other undesirable feelings and emotions. This you realize and that is good. However, you are wrong in saying you can't do anything about it. You can change any thoughts you choose.
The first step is to realize that your jealousy is hurting you and holding you back, which you have done. The second step is to make a decision to not allow these harmful thoughts to overwhelm you. From this point on, each time you find yourself feeling jealous, use the techniques of eliminating negative thoughts (see Topic of the Month, The Importance of Eliminating Negative Thinking).
Also, make peace within yourself - you are not your sister nor do you have to have her life to be happy. At thirty your life has hardly passed you by. In many ways it has just begun. Eliminate your jealousy by refusing to entertain those thoughts. Reframe your beliefs about yourself and your life, including your thoughts about children and your husband. You will find, as James Allen so wisely pointed out, that "a new life is but a new mind."

No question; just wanted to say thanks for all the help. I review many of the questions on the website and most ARE MINE. I just placed another order for Power & Glory, the book, and a cassette on Happiness (I already have the video on a Mind Power program). I wish I had learned all this years ago; I could have been better at everything. But, I'm forty now and ready to get going! Thanks again.

A Thanks for your feedback. Each of us discovers Mind Powers at a different stage in our life. Some at 16, others at 60. I'm thrilled also that you have taken advantage of the books, tapes and videos available on this site. Too often people just log on and read the Topic of the Month and theQuestions and Answers. While I'm happy to pass on information this way and will continue to do so, there is such a wealth of other information in these products that I sometimes feel the need to remind our readers of this fact. Your letter gives me an opportunity to do so. So readers - if you haven't clicked on to the Books and Tapes Section, you're missing some incredible information.
Q
After reading Mind Power I had to decide how to put it into practice. I decided to start with changing my beliefs. I wrote down my beliefs on all aspects of my life, i.e., career, finances, social life, family life, love life and self-image. Opposite each negative belief I wrote a positive one. Now my problem is that I am not sure whether it is correct for me to read every day from the top to the bottom of my list. I have about 15 new beliefs per category, and by the time I get to the last one I have forgotten what I've been reading. I need to change my beliefs in all the categories and I'm afraid that if I only take 1 or 2 at a time for 3 months, I will be unable to effect the necessary changes anytime soon.

There is an old maxim in Mind Powers that says you crawl before you walk and you walk before you run. A common error when you first discover Mind Power is that you try to change everything all at once. Not only is this impossible, but you discourage yourself by trying too much and not succeeding. A better approach is to choose several areas of your life that you want to change. Prioritize your desires. What is most important to you? Set up Mind Power programs to create new realities in this area of your life. By focusing on just a few things, you are then able to achieve them. This gives you added confidence to carry on and change more things. Trying to do everything all at once is always a mistake, and a mistake that beginners often make.
Relax, take your time; life is a long and exciting adventure.
Q
I am single and have a baby with my ex. We parted 3 years ago and I have been unable to move on, partly because I still have a great relationship with him and partly because I don't think I want to lose him. In the chapter about personal relationships you advise that we should not put a face to the person we want when visualising. I constantly find myself visualising my ex. Is it OK to do this? Is it OK to want a specific person?
South Africa
A It is absolutely fine to want a specific person if you know whom that person is. Since you have a child with this individual, it makes sense to employ the techniques towards re-establishing your relationship with him, especially since you say you still have a great relationship with him. Why, I wonder, did you break up? Was it you or him? Check with your intuition and your subconscious to make sure this is indeed what you want, and then go for it.
