Monthly Mind Power Questions & Answers

September 2002

Q I learned Transcendental Meditation some time ago, but have only just gotten into the habit of daily practice. Does the daily practice of such a meditation technique increase the effectiveness of mind power?

Wellington, New Zealand

A The daily practice of ANYTHING increases the effectiveness of mind power. Something happens within our consciousness when we practice an activity daily. It makes us more alert and in tune. Meditation is an excellent complimentary practice to mind power, as it clears the mind and allows us to be more aware. I'm sure you'll notice a difference in how you think and feel as you continue with this practice.

Q Mr Kehoe, firstly, thank you for bringing much enjoyment to my life. I have used your techniques in the past and have enjoyed the rewards. I've also fallen off for a few months, but I'm regaining the "Power Of My Universe" that I had in the past when I started using Mind Power.

Question 1: Every Morning when I awake, I seem to have this terrible feeling of nervousness. I can't quite put my finger on it, but during the day, it clears considerably. I really worry sometimes; is my mind trying to tell me something about the future, and is it good or bad?

Question 2: Sometimes at night, I relax myself to such an extent that while visualising, I fall asleep. I therefore feel that sometimes I miss the benefit of my mind power session. How do I go about relaxing without falling asleep?

Johannesburg, South Africa

A I'm not sure why the feeling of nervousness is with you. Usually nervousness comes from the thoughts we are thinking. We are nervous because we're worried about something. We're anxious. And this comes from the thoughts that we think about some future activity that we think is going to be unpleasant for us. However, since you have not indicated that you know what it is, then I'm not sure exactly why it is happening to you.

You ask if your mind is trying to tell you something about the future? Perhaps it is. Maybe you should go to your subconscious mind and ask it this question. Your mind is always trying to bring to you information that is valuable to you, so persist with working with the techniques of the subconscious, and I'm sure that your nervousness will disappear. Also, you might look at whether you are doing your mind power exercises regularly. You do not usually feel nervous or anxious when you're regularly running a mind power program.

In answer to your second question, quite often you will indeed fall asleep doing mind powers, especially if you're lying in bed, and you're quite tired. And while there is value in putting thoughts in your mind directly as you go to sleep, you might find that it is of more value to you to do your visualization exercises earlier in the evening, or perhaps even in the morning or afternoon. Quite often, if you do your exercises late at night when you're tired, you will fall asleep. So my advice to you is to do your mind power exercises a little earlier than what you are now.

Q In your book "Mind Power" you say that the universe is energy and that our consciousness is just energy in its finest and truest form. My question is, if the universe is made up of energy, do you believe that our minds affect the whole universe and not just the world that we are accustomed to?
North Carolina, USA

A There is an old Upanishad saying, "When a blade of grass is cut the whole universe shivers. "Just a pebble dropped into a pond causes ripples throughout the whole pond. Our thoughts have an effect, however small, on the whole universe. No cause is without its effect. Our thoughts on a global perspective also help to create a world consciousness. We help or hinder not just ourselves but others with our thoughts.

Q I seem to have everything going for me in life and yet I struggle to experience the feeling of joy in my life. Please give me some guidelines on using specific affirmations to overcome my depressive, lethargic, no energy, lack of enthusiasm, my no-sense-of-purpose state of mind.
South Africa

A Your question contains several keys to your answer. First you say you "seem to have everything going for you in life." If this is so then begin to acknowledge the great blessings you have. We often forget how lucky we are. We get bogged down in new desires relating to what we don't have. It's like the old story of a man who felt sorry for himself because he had no shoes, until he met a man who had no feet. So if you have lots going for you, each day take time to acknowledge and give thanks. I don't mean a ten-second going through the motions acknowledgment, and then a return to feeling sluggish and lethargic. I mean a daily exercise, for 5 minutes, acknowledging all the things you have going for you. Feeling good about it. See the Acknowledging chapter in Mind Power Into the 21st Century.

Secondly you mention your "no-sense-of-purpose" state of mind. When one has no purpose or goal, then it is easy to fall into the state you describe. You need to find something to become passionate about. If there are no new goals that you feel attracted to, how about finding a charity or foundation that needs help? Move beyond your own preoccupation and begin helping others. Why not dedicate a couple of days a week to something you believe in? You have an opportunity to do many things. Each life contains multiple options and choices to help ourselves and others.
Some affirmations:

1. My life contains incredible opportunities to help others.

2. I have abundant energy.

3. Each day brings me tremendous opportunity to be happy.

4. I am active and have a passion for life.

Q I'm always anxious about my studies, but the results are excellent! How can I
eliminate this restless feeling, which I know sometimes reduces my performance?

Finland

A Fear is a negative emotion and you're absolutely right; it often interferes with and hinders performance. To eliminate fear or anxiety there are several processes that will prove effective. First read the past monthly topic on "Eliminating Negatives" (September 1997).

Also acknowledge yourself regularly for your past successes and excellence. See the chapter entitled "Acknowledging" in my book Mind Power Into the 21st Century. This will build a vibration of success.

Thirdly, regularly visualize yourself doing well, passing all your tests with high marks and being confident.

Working this way with your mind will eliminate the anxiety.

Q I was wondering about "affirmations." Is it okay to say different affirmations to yourself throughout the day as they pertain to different situations (e.g., health, money matters, relationships)? It has been said that the mind can only hold one thought at a time, so should I focus on just one affirmation, an affirmation which coincides with my "primary goal?" To say different affirmations and "think" about more than one goal would scatter my energy, would it not? Thanks for your time Mr. Kehoe!

WI, USA

A The mind can only think one thought at a time during any given one- or two-second period, but there are obviously a great many of these periods in a day. The number of thoughts and affirmations you could say in any given day would number in the thousands.

Doing too many different types of affirmations can indeed scatter your energy. You would be much better to pick a few goals to work on rather than ten or twenty. But you are not limited to just one goal. And each goal can have many affirmations, providing they are on the "theme" of that particular goal. The mind likes diversity so having, let's say, six different affirmations for each goal would work well for you. That way you can go to whichever one feels appropriate in any given situation.

Q As I see the value of this process, I also feel that this process has been responsible for creating the opposite side of the coin, so to speak. If this process was responsible for creating a negative trigger in my life, will practicing this re-empower me completely and so disarm the negative? I know this question is asked in a round about way, so I hope you understand my point. Also if this is so, how am I able to guard myself against this form of negative programming?

South Africa

A Your question is asked in a round about way, but it is an important question and needs to be addressed.

Mind Power can be used toward positive or negative ends. It can lift us up and help us achieve our goals, or it can keep us down and stuck in failure and depression. The mind itself does not determine what we think, we do. We must be the intelligent wielder of these powerful tools called thoughts. Negative thinking produces negative results. Positive thinking produces positive results.

How am I thinking? This should be the question we ask ourselves. Answering it will reveal a lot. Mind Power is a system that allows any individual to master and control his or her thoughts. We are the master of our destinies because we can master our thoughts. My suggestion to you is to avail yourself of other information contained on this website and begin practicing Mind Power. A whole new life will open up to you when you do.

Q <>b Mr Kehoe, I was in Sedona, Arizona about five years ago where I picked up your Mind Power book, read a couple of pages and was totally taken to another level. After the purchase, I read the book for the first time over the next few days. I am not much of a reader, but I could not put your book down. After reading the first few chapters, I noted that you had signed this book; what a bonus!

I was recently on a test in Montana, where I was reading the book for the third time and left it on the airplane en route home. I was saddened in losing this treasure, but my wife and I discussed it, and came to the conclusion that it might enrich the life of the person who found this book, the same way that it has mine. I would like to take the time and opportunity to thank you for the words in your books. (I am currently reading The Practice of Happiness). I will be looking for the next time that you are in Seattle. I would like to know if you might consider autographing another copy of Mind Power for me. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your words. Keep writing and I will keep reading.

Kent, Washington

A Thank you for your email. I most certainly will sign a copy for you. Send your address to me and I will send you a copy free of charge.

I wanted to share your letter because the attitude you adopted on losing the book in Montana is revealing. Many others would be depressed at their misfortune, but you chose to see it as an opportunity for someone else to become enriched, and this very well might have happened. But your reaction is the key. Your attitude shows me you understand deeply the interconnectedness of all things, and that your heart is good.

These attitudes will bring you health, happiness and success in your chosen field. You are destined for great things and much will be revealed to you as you continue on your path. My heart soared as I read this letter and I hope it inspires all who read it. May you be an example to thousands. Have a wonderful life and I hope some day we will meet.
