Q Today is my first birthday. I've practised mind power for one year now, for 20 minutes each and every day. The results are astounding. In that time, I've also helped four people join the 90-day club, with similarly incredible results, and many others apply mind power in some way.
Joining the 90-day club is a life-changing experience, very different than intermittent practice. Some days it was easy; other days I had to make myself practise at 2 a.m. Desire for results got me to 90 days. I got to 365 days from the inspiration my students took each time they asked me if I was still going. I also did it to share that it can be done with consciousness generally, with you, and if you publish this, with anyone who reads about it.
The results are so apparent now that people I haven't seen in a while do a double-take and comment, and some wish to learn from me about Mind Power. I think I've given away almost thirty copies of Mind Power into the 21st Century in the past year.
I have a question: Why do I feel self-conscious about my strength? I am creating a belief that, "I always have heaps of money." Yet when I, looking very well dressed, walk past a beggar, I feel bad about this belief because of how it makes the beggar aware of his situation. I am creating a belief that "I am very attractive to women," yet I feel bad about holding this belief when it makes a woman want me who is disappointed if I'm not interested. Yet I am comfortable with someone being much wealthier than I, or a woman I am interested in not feeling the same. I even feel a little big-headed sharing my success above. I can't seem to intuit an answer to this one. It's strange because I feel so happy and confident now most of the time, and I see that, on the whole, my strength contributes much more to others than my weakness ever did.
Wellington, New Zealand
A Thanks for your sharing. Many readers will be inspired to follow your example, which brings me to your question. Never be ashamed of your success. I have a saying that it's very important to understand: "My success helps many people; my failure helps no one." Don't be selfish, be successful; it helps so many people. While there will undoubtedly be occasions where, in spite of your best intentions, your success will offend some, it is a small price to pay for all those who will benefit. Keep up the good work.
Q When you visualise, do you visualise in the first or the third person? In other words, should I visualise as though I'm someone else seeing myself doing something, or should I visualise seeing what I want through my own eyes?
Cape Town, South Africa
A In Mind Power Into the 21st Century I discuss both methods, and say that both work equally well. Some people have a preference for doing it one way or the other; that is fine. Choose whatever way feels most comfortable for you.
Having said this, it is also valuable to experiment with both ways. Sometimes we get into a habit of doing things one way and just stick to it. The mind likes variety, so it can be valuable to change your visualization routine.
Q I have read into and practice the art of interpreting my dreams. But my question is what do you make of daydreams? It seems as though every day my subconscious sends me Polaroid-type images, snapshots if you will. How do I go about interpreting these rapid images?
Coon Rapids, MN
A Nocturnal dreams that we have during sleep are different from daydreams and should be treated differently. These dreams can be interpreted using many different techniques, and are in many ways hieroglyphic,' using symbols and metaphors. Daydreams on the other hand need not be interpreted, but rather noticed. Take note of the content of these daydreams. Are they pleasant or unpleasant? Do they revolve around a desire or a fear? Do they repeat? Are there patterns? Just notice what is happening.
Spontaneous daydreams (images that come to the mind while awake) are always from the subconscious. They provide an excellent snapshot of what is going on within. If they are of a pleasant, successful nature, this is a good sign. If they are unpleasant or defeatist in any way, this can be a valuable sign that this is what our subconscious is presently working with. This is a strong signal to us to begin a new Mind Power program to change our subconscious with new more positive energy. Hope this helps.
Q Can I make a little lyric of an affirmation?
Pretoria, South Africa
A Absolutely. Be creative with affirmations. You don't have to use a complete sentence; you can use just a phrase or a word. Sometimes a powerful phrase that rhymes works well. A lyric falls into this category. The key is that the affirmation lodges in the mind through repetition. A lyric repeated regularly will work very effectively.
Q John, I recently had a work visit to Zimbabwe. On my way I had to transit at Johannesburg. This is where I found this treasure, your Mind Power book. I bought the book and started reading it, keep on re-reading it. The problem is that I have yet not started a formal program of all that is in the book. I badly need to acquire the skills of Mind Power, especially through your guidance. I am a computer specialist with an MSc in Information Science. I still find that I have all the energy and brains to do more and contribute more in our computer field. I am 37 years old with a family of two kids and my wife. Please suggest a plan to start with.
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
A There is an old saying that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. You have certainly taken the first step by having the Mind Power book. But reading the Mind Power book is not enough. One must begin to apply the techniques in your life. You must first of all examine your life and look carefully at where you want to see movement, what goals you want to achieve, what is it that you want to do with your life. And once you have made some of these decisions, then you begin applying the Mind Power techniques in a very systematic way. Set yourself up a program. Decide how much time you're going to spend. Chart yourself and daily spend anywhere from a minimum of five minutes to a maximum of forty minutes in doing your exercises. And when you do this you'll find that you'll build some momentum, and all things will be made known to you as you also harness the powers of your subconscious mind.
I notice that you are from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and I have great memories of being in Dar es Salaam and going on a three-week safari through Tanzania. You have a magnificent country and I wish you all the best in your life. It is certainly a joy for me to see this information getting spread to all parts of the world.
Q How can I make my mind powerful?
Address unknown
A You do not have to make your mind powerful. Your mind is already powerful. It is the most incredibly powerful mechanism that has ever been created in the universe. What we need to do is learn how to use it. Practicing mind power principles is how one learns to tap into the great natural power that we all have.
Q Is it possible for me to get a copy of the past Q and A? It makes interesting reading.
South Africa
A We have added a search engine to the site so you can look at Questions and Answers according to topics. The Questions and Answers are the most popular part of this website and I enjoy answering the questions because they are usually relevant to most people and we all learn from reading them. All the past Questions and Answers are in the search engine. Take your time and browse through them.
Q I read Mind Power about a year ago, and I do believe that if ever a book were to "hold the key" to transforming one's life, this is it. (I knew it would be great when a friend of mine, who admits to not having the attention span to finish a book, read your book more than once!)
Now, to the question. I have not only been exposed to the lessons presented in Mind Power, but it makes perfect sense to me how the techniques can indeed work.
That being said, I have a big event coming up in about two weeks The Miss Michigan Pageant. Let me say this, I am not a "pageant girl" who is fixated on beauty. In fact this is my first pageant. I am doing this pageant to put my mind to the test. I am an attractive, well-spoken, healthy young woman, but I truly believe that the pattern of my thoughts will set me apart from the others.
But, every once in a while, a little morsel of fear will invade the pit of my stomach. I don't know if fear is the right word because I am not really afraid. I guess what I feel occasionally is doubt, even though for the most part, I KNOW I am fully capable of winning the whole thing. My question is this, what can I do to immediately nip it in the bud, kill it upon contact. Is there a particular thought or phrase that you would recommend?
Mr. Kehoe, I am almost there. I can feel it. What must I do to get over this little hump?
Westland, Michigan USA
A It's only natural to feel these "morsels of fear" as you put it. Luckily there are excellent ways to eliminate them. I suggest you go to the past monthly topics and read the very first one, "Eliminating Negatives." This will give you some excellent techniques to use. Have fun at your pageant.
Q I have just finished reading The Practice of Happiness. It is magnificent. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter and felt positively inspired, moved and challenged right the way through. It seems to me that you have managed to distill from your talents some of the finest quality writing, and from life's treasure trove some of the most touching experiences, to create a stunningly beautiful gem. Your writing seems to just get better and better, and in this book you write with inspiring poetry and soul stirring grace. There is no doubt in my mind that you are on the good red road, following that path which leaves you, nature and the rest of humanity the better for your having been there! I would like to both congratulate and thank you for creating this beautiful work of art, which will surely help keep all those lives it touches in touch with their LIFE as it has mine. I love the format, layout and inclusion of lovely pictures too, so congratulations to you and whoever else was involved with this part of the creation!
Sedgefield, South Africa
A I am absolutely thrilled with the response that I have been getting, both in reviews, and also from people writing on this site about the results that they're getting from reading The Practice of Happiness. I have also been receiving a lot of questions on when this book will be coming out in North America. (Presently this book is only available in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.) It will be released in North America in the fall of the year 2000. I will be doing a major publicity tour through many cities at that time, and will keep you informed as we come closer to the date. Meanwhile you can get this book via this website. To have a look at several chapters you can refer to both the October and November Topics of the Month. Once again, I am thrilled that so many people are responding to my newest book.
Q I first read your book Mind Power about five years ago. And have read it cover to cover many times. When I look back on the last five years, I realize that the happiest times are when I am daily practising, incredibly easy not to do your exercises, practice persistence and discipline.
Wellington, New Zealand
A When we do mind powers regularly and consistently, we find that we get excellent results. But for one reason or another, we all seem to fall into ruts where we forget to use it, or times where we just forget about it altogether. I like to keep a daily diary where I record whether I'm doing my mind power exercises or not. And when you do this, and I've certainly noticed it myself, if ever there is a time where things aren't working well, and I'm having problems and difficulties, I always go to my daily diary and say, "Have I been practicing regularly?" And almost always I find that I haven't.
I sometimes challenge my students to see if you can do your exercises every day for 60 to 90 days. Chart yourself. If you don't chart yourself, you're fooling yourself. Make a little note when you do your exercises and when you don't. And you will be quite amazed that it is incredibly easy not to do your exercises. It takes practice, persistence and discipline to do these exercises regularly and consistently. Anybody can do the exercises for a few days here or there, but can you do the exercises every day for a longer period of time?
I like that you have said that, looking back over five years, you find that the happiest times are when you are daily practicing the book's principles. And that's what everyone will find when they work with mind powers.
Q When performing various techniques such as acknowledgement and imprinting, do you recommend concentrating on images and letting the emotions follow, or do you generate the emotions first? What is the nature of the relationship between internal sensory images and emotion?
Los Angeles, USA
A It is the old question - Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The images will produce emotions. Emotions will produce images. So start with whichever one feels comfortable and let the other naturally follow. You might want to alternate and experiment with each. One day start with the image. The next day start with the emotion. See which is more effective for you. Each person is different. But you have hit upon a very important point. When you're acknowledging and imprinting include the images and the feeling. Lose yourself in both of these stimulations.
Q I have recently had a difficult break up with my husband. He left with another woman. I realise now that I contributed a lot to the situation because of my fear and negative thinking. I am still confused and hurt by what has happened and feel I need some sort of way of healing and moving on. In my family, therapy is the something we have turned to in tough times. However, realising now the power of the mind I am now uncertain as to whether dredging through the past and all of the hurt and painful things that have happened is a good thing, or whether it could inadvertently create more of the same in the future by my mind focusing on it. On the other hand it may lead to a deeper understanding of myself, which is probably a good thing. I feel that I need some support, but don't want to be doing anything else that could cause me harm in the future.
I am definitely working on my mind powers. However, I would appreciate any thoughts you might have on therapy as well.
Sydney, Australia
A I'm sorry to hear of your situation. However, without knowing you or your exact situation beyond what you share in your e-mail, I am encouraged by your tone. You mention "healing and moving on." That is the right approach. You also mention that "fear and negative thinking" contributed to the situation. If you were to truly learn the toxic effects that fear and negative thinking have on our life and our relationships, then this alone would be a very valuable lesson.
Regarding therapy, only you can make that decision. Therapy can be very valuable in helping one move on from a traumatic or unpleasant experience. The emphasis should always be on putting yourself in touch with your feelings. However, once this has been fully experienced, you are ready to move on using Mind Power. Let me also suggest to you that once your lessons are learned and you change your attitude and begin regularly using Mind Power, there is no reason why you can't attract another relationship that will be more fulfilling and nurturing than the one you just finished. It happens all the time. As the philosopher Jones Allen said, "A new life is but a new mind."
Q What do you mean when you say, "Thoughts are a reality of a different dimension," or, "Thoughts are not limited by time and space." My BIG question, which you've never answered is: Where do thoughts come from? If my mind receives and sends thoughts like a transmitter, where do they come from? In its purest form, a thought is energy. When does it make the quantum leap, and why?
Cape Town, South Africa
A These are profound questions, and I will do my best to answer them to your satisfaction. First, when I say "Thoughts are a reality of a different dimension," I am pointing out the fact that thoughts are not meaningless images in our mind, but are actual forces of energy that intermix and vibrate within the matrix of our reality. Our thoughts and our reality are connected.
"Thoughts are not limited by time or space." What I'm saying here is that thoughts are the most powerful forces in the universe. They transcend the laws of our physical universe as we understand them. For example, the sun's rays, travelling at the speed of light, 186,000 miles a second, take approximately seven minutes to travel from the sun to the earth. Our thoughts can travel there in an instant.
Now the BIG question:
These mysterious thoughts we are experiencing come from a variety of sources. In no particular order, they can come from our own subconscious mind, and from the consciousness of our race. Every thought that has ever been thought since the beginning of time exists now in the astral ether. Thoughts can also come from those who are close to us. So you can see that our mind, being a sender and receiver of thought, opens us up to many channels.
Q I'm only 14 years old and I've just finished reading your mind power book, and I was wondering if my subconscious mind could tell me what I should do in life career wise? If it could tell me what carer path would make me the happiest and most fulfilled?
Matamata, New Zealand
A Absolutely. This is exactly what the subconscious will do. What a wonderful gift to find this practice at the age of 14. Let me add a piece of wisdom that will serve you well. Follow your passion. Discover what you love to do, and where you are talented, and let that lead you. To the extent to which you do this, you will be happy and fulfilled.
Q I just wanted to say thank you. Your research and the gift that you give to all who happen to run across your work is priceless. I first read your book Mind Power about four or five years ago and it changed my life. Then for awhile, I stopped using the techniques in everything I do, and used them for only certain things. The areas where I kept using the techniques flourished and continued to grow and become what I wanted. The areas where I stopped using the techniques went from good to bad, and did not flourish the way I wanted them to. For awhile I wondered why. I had given my copy of your book away to a friend who needed some inspiration in her life. So I recently ordered another copy for myself. I read the entire thing again in one week. You have to know that I am an avid reader. I read everything I get my hands on, but I do not read books twice because I always know what they are going to say. However, reading your book for the second time inspired me again and reminded me of the techniques.
So thank you from the bottom of my inspired heart. I wish you well, with continued success in the years to come.
Burbank, CA
A I love hearing from my students. Thanks for taking the time to share. Your devotion to this practice will reap great rewards in your life.
Q Thank you for all your very special books and writings on this site. You have every right to feel proud of your accomplishments and many students! Having practiced your mind power techniques and the others you have highlighted in Money Success and You with great success, I am now in a position both financially and altruistically to make a difference!
My dilemma is as follows: this month I was about to pick a number of charities to make a donation to, when I realised that in my given field of expertise (IT), I could make a much bigger difference if I were to set-up a non-profit organisation (NPO) that would help raise funds for various charities on an ongoing basis. In order to do such a thing it would require money, so I put on my thinking cap and came up with an innovative ideI could set-up a separate company that would use a portion of its profits to fund the operations of the NPO. Please, can you advise me if this is in truth self-serving and missing the point of trying to make a difference, given the fact that the overall difference it would make in raising money for charity would be far greater and more sustainable than any individual contribution I might make myself, and given that I would also stand to profit from my efforts in the company that would fund the NPO?
Johannesburg, South Africa
A I congratulate you on both your success and on your desire to make a difference. I am a firm believer that ten percent of all personal profits should be tithed back to our community to help make a difference. How this happens is as creative and unique as the number of people who practice and participate in it. In answer to your question, I would suggest you ask your heart what it thinks. Sometimes in our attempts to help others there can be a self-serving aspect that slips in. Here our heart can help. It knows deeply and sees clearly our intent. You can't fool the heart. Look deep within yourself and you will know the answer. The mind can be very tricky in making up reasons why we should do something, but the heart is honest and truthful. Act upon what you feel intuitively inside.
Q I read your website religiously, and every so often read your books again to stay on track. I have had quite a bit of success with mind power, but I am always looking to improve my skills. So I have a question about the practice. I have a 50-minute commute to work, and use that time in the morning and then again in the afternoon to work on my mind power program. I do this religiously. I usually start out saying my affirmations aloud, and then, for my visualizations, I use more of a conversational approach. I imagine myself talking to someone about my life with my life the way I want it to be. The situations that I want I express to this imaginary person as if they are already occurring. Then at night I do a 5- to 10-minute meditation with more of a traditional visualization process. The problem is I don't always do the night visualization. I probably do it 5 nights out of the week. My goal of course is to do it every day.
St. Louis, MO
A You don't have to do Mind Power three times a day. All that is required is a daily commitment of 15 to 30 minutes. If you practice this regularly, you will see excellent results, just as you have indicated you have.
It sounds like you have a very comfortable practice that works well for you.
A common mistake that Mind Power students make is believing that the more Mind Power they do, the more successful they will be. This is not the case. It is not the amount of time you put in every day. Three hours is not necessarily better than 30 minutes. The key is daily repetition. So in answer to your question, it doesn't matter if you miss your night visualization.
Q I have two things which now occupy my mind. First of all, anxiety. Recently I have become afraid of a lot of things which in the past I have always liked to do, e.g., travel by air (I used to be a flight attendant), rock-climbing, and ski-touring (because of the avalanches). This is really hard for me, because I actually love doing all those things. What can I do in order to give back my mind its self-confidence? Secondly, studying. Is there a method to learn how to study a lot of boring stuff in a short time?
Austria
A It is hard to say why you are feeling anxiety about activities you've previously enjoyed. One thing for sure, though, is that your anxiety is being caused by your thoughts. The trick is to discover what these thoughts are and why they are happening to you. Maybe the thoughts are irrational, or perhaps they are expressing some valuable concerns about safety, commitments, etc. Try to distance yourself from your mind and examine what is happening inside as if you're observing someone else's thoughts. Be tolerant and compassionate with yourself; listen carefully for the clues. Knowing that your anxiety is thought-related helps. Address the concerns that your mind is raising and your anxiety will probably pass.
In answer to your second question, you can harness your will to be up to the task of having to study "boring stuff," and you could repeat an affirmation such as, "I'm studying quickly and effectively," and/or, "I remember and retain everything I am studying."
