Q I'm a sixteen-year-old school student, and I have decided upon a career. The career is an extremely lofty ambition, and doesn't require school results or anything like that. Many would consider my goals to be too dreamy and unrealistic. I am an idealist. If I go forth into this career, I'll be taking a massive gamble with my future. It's either all the way up to heaven, or all the way down to hell. Now, can Mind Power, and practising it diligently ensure my success?
Cape Town, South Africa
A Every decision you make impacts on your life. I suggest you read, "Follow the Call" from the past monthly topics. My views are well known to those who regularly follow this web site. I say trust following your passion absolutely. Trust it more than anything. Having said that, you're only sixteen and you have lots of time. Why don't you finish your high school first and from there make your decision (God! I sound like a parent horrors!) You can work on your dream career and go to school at the same time.
"Can Mind Power ensure my success," you ask. Nothing is absolute, but Mind Power gives you incredible tools to harness success. Often when we pursue one direction, life has other plans and we end up in areas we hadn't conceived of. But following your passion and using Mind Power regularly are two of the best decisions you can ever make.
Q I read the Mind Power Introduction. What you are trying to explain is "thoughts
are part of the energy in the universe." Do you relate this with "chi?" The Chinese believe "chi" is all around us. Thai Chi is a form of exercise that most benefits the chi in our body, but I never thought that we use it in our minds.
Alhambra, CA
A Everything in the universe is made up of vibrations of energy and our thoughts are also vibrations of energy. Now this is not to say that thoughts are the chi. This energy is an energy that flows in and through the body and you're absolutely right to say that the Chinese have mapped out a system with energy points on the body associated with the chi. The Chinese mapped this system out four thousand years ago and it is a very beneficial system for working with health and energy. However, this is not the energy I'm speaking of when I talk about our thoughts being energy. The energy of our thoughts and the energy of chi, while both energy and vibrations, are not the same thing.
Q I am a 33-year-old mother of two toddlers, a recently successful documentary filmmaker, an American living in southern Africa for the past nine years, a wife of a man who looks and acts like the person I've always wanted as a partner, and have followed pretty much all of my childhood dreams. Now that many of my childhood dreams have been achieved, I feel an emptiness not knowing what my new dreams should be. I have spent the last year soul searching for new dreams and goals and my mind still turns up blanks. Turning up blanks, I rarely act on anything. You wrote in your book The Practice of Happiness, "Give away goals that no longer have any meaning for you." Perhaps I should let go of my childhood dreams, but how do I move on to my new goals in my next stage of life? How do I become creative and inspired to stop turning up blanks and come up with what I truly want to do now?
A What you are going through is not uncommon. Quite often when we have had great success in all the different areas of our life we find that still something more is needed. And it is good that this feeling comes to us. Really it is like a sacred wounding, whereby we look at what is really important to us in our life. Let me congratulate you that at such a young age you have so many great things happening for you. However, life is multidimensional; we have many needs. And it is time to look within and see what other directions might be calling to you.
In my chapter on "Follow the Call," which was also one of the past Topics of the Month, I talk about trusting the instinct and flowing with what is calling to us. I instinctively feel that something new is calling to you. If you practice the techniques on the subconscious mind regularly, what will happen is that your subconscious will inform you of the new direction you are to go. All life flows in cycles, and considering the great things that you have accomplished so far, I think that when something new clarifies itself for you, you will act upon it both aggressively and enthusiastically. I'm sure that you have great gifts to share with many people, and all this will be revealed in it's own time when you go to the subconscious.
And let us also remember that these times of confusion, of not knowing, are also valuable for developing the psyche and our trust in life. Let go and flow with what feels right for you. I'm sure that you will do the best thing.
Q I have recently begun reading Mind Power, and find that it is a great book and that the lessons are valuable. However, my question is, how do you find your purpose in life? I feel like I could accomplish anything I wanted to, but I am 30 years old and still don't know what I want to do with my life. My dream was always to become successful through my music. Guitar is my first love, but now I have a family to feed and with work there is no time left for music. My job is very stressful and not suited for me, what should I do?
Barre, VT
A I am glad you have discovered the book Mind Power and have access to this Website. Let me remind you and the other readers that there is a huge difference between reading the books and listening to the tapes and actually practicing the exercises. Mind power is a practice, not a philosophy. As you practice mind power consistently you will begin manifesting your goals. Too often we settle for less than we deserve. There is no reason why you can't have a career more in harmony with your love of music. I suggest you read one of the past topics of the month "Follow the Call." It is an excerpt from my recent book, The Practice of Happiness and will answer your question perfectly.
Q I am a 36-year-old mother of two. I have a very good career, a lovely man, great kids and a super place to live, good friends... the whole bit! My question though is about passion. Although I am interested in many things, there is nothing that really "gets me going." Do you have any suggestions on helping me to discover my true purpose?
New Zealand
A A "true purpose" is not always an easy thing to discover. Nor does the term mean there is only one. There could be hundreds of purposes that would be in harmony with who you are. Also, at different stages of our life, different callings are made available to us. So my advice to you is, rather than searching for a "true purpose," go within and ask yourself what can I do today, what can I do this week, what can I do this year that will nourish me and help others. Look for little things. Follow your passion one small step at a time. Doing this will lead you in the right direction. And while doing this, don't forget to enjoy the view. It sounds like you have a wonderful life. Appreciate it and give thanks.
Q I have a 37-year-old friend who has just been diagnosed with a brain tumor and given a prognosis of less than a year to live. He and his family want to fight this tumor and make it go away. Can the whole family and friends do the same visualizations and affirmations to help him, and if so will this have a more powerful effect?
New Zealand
A These are always such difficult questions to answer. My attitude is always that you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain by using these techniques. The power of prayer and visualization has been proven conclusively, so it is always advantageous to do these techniques. Whenever you get others to assist you it is important that they feel comfortable doing these exercises and not feel under any pressure or obligation to do so. And there is certainly a cumulative effect in many people practicing the techniques in unison.
However, at the same time, I don't want to give the impression that ten people are twice as good as five. It doesn't work that way. Two or three dedicated people can be very powerful. Ultimately the person with the brain tumor can have the greatest effect. His attitude and daily practice are crucial.
I suggest not "fighting" the tumor but doing it in a relaxed and calm way. I might also suggest two tapes: "Healing Yourself," a 12-minute visualization and affirmation tape to be played daily, and the health and healing seminar tape. Good Luck and my thoughts are with you.
Q John, I started practicing your methods about four years ago and they have had great effect on my life. My main hassle is simply that I cannot stick to one affirmation, after a couple days I think of something else to focus on and start anew. I don't like to always fall back to a generic "every day in every way I get better and better." I need to be specific and focused. Any input?
Vancouver, Canada
A The mind likes diversity and it is quite common to shift from affirmation to affirmation. However, if you're constantly thinking of something new to focus on you're not giving your mind the time needed to manifest it. If you're working to manifest money, you could have ten or twenty different money affirmations. Likewise with relationships or health. You're not limited in the number you use as long as they are all directing you towards the main goal you're trying to achieve. Try picking three or four affirmations and doing them for a full week, and then the next week pick three or four news ones. This way you can have diversity but still focus on the general subject you want to manifest.
Q For some reason I always seem to sabotage myself once I get started on something. I have tried many different approaches but always seem to blow it in the end. Even when I visualize my ideal outcome, somewhere I seem to sabotage myself.
Toronto, ON
A There could be several reasons for this. Firstly, if you have contradictory values and beliefs about what you are trying to achieve you will have great difficulty achieving it. For example, if you want to be abundantly wealthy but believe that people with money are greedy and that you'll have to go against your values in order to be wealthy, then you have a real within. Look closely to see if your goals and values and beliefs are all in harmony. Secondly: Is the belief, "I always seem to sabotage myself," working within you? Has it taken root? Do you find yourself saying this to yourself like an affirmation? This could be a major cause of your problem. Thirdly: With many goals, before you reach fulfillment you will go through stages of frustration, failure and disappointment. Don't give up too soon. Don't let temporary setbacks discourage you. See if one or more of these reasons is the cause of your sabotage.
Q I have read Mind Power, and enjoyed it very much! I have read Maltz, Murphy, Chopra, Shwartz, etc. and believe in the power of our minds to improve life for ourselves and those around us! My question regards tithing. I believe in giving, but I had to stop tithing this past paycheck because I was actually running low on money! I still believe in giving, but should we give as we are able, or continue tithing? I remember reading a Q&A where you suggested tithing. I would really appreciate your advice. Best in life...
Hawaii, USA
A If you're running low on money, this is when it is more important than ever to continue tithing. The message you're giving to your subconscious when you stop tithing is that you're poor. You're affirming that your connection to abundance is over. Why would you do that? If you only had $50 in your pocket, what a powerful gesture to give away $5! My advice is certainly to begin tithing again.
Q I'm a 17-year-old man busy with my first year at a university. On average, most people who are studying their first year are around 20 years of age. Often I feel very small in this place, and that has a major impact on my self-esteem. I always feel too down to practise my mind power techniques. To add to the pressure, I'm still growing and my body and mind are going through changes. I want to pass my studies and become successful. I try to motivate myself but motivation is temporary; I need Drive'. Please tell me how to become a winner in life.
Bloemfontein, South Africa
A I tell my students that there are 157 excellent and sincere reasons why not to do the exercises. The Great Trickster (your own mind) will always come up with many reasons to convince you to not do the exercises. Why? Because the mind initially resists any training. Feeling "too down to practice" is one of them. However if you don't practice, you don't see results. It's that simple, and it's your choice.
Q I'm a 26-year-old unmarried girl from India. Though always good at studies, I don't seem to now get what I expect. I'm always worried about my performance. I'm completely dissatisfied with my career. I just don't seem to get anything out of my life. My problem is when I'm working, I'm not focused. I find myself worrying about results. I don't know how to control this. Will meditation help me? I'm frustrated because of this. I earned good ranks in school and college, but when I see average or below average getting good jobs, I wonder why I can't?
Chandigarh, India
A Your answer lies within your own question. "I'm always worried about my performance." And "I find myself worrying about results." This is the problem.
Worry is mind power in reverse. Worry is allowing your mind to focus on the results you don't want. What you worry about and fear, you attract. It's unfortunate but true. What you need to do is very simple. Change your "worry" into positive expectations. How? By practicing Mind Power techniques. Also check out the past topic of the Month, "Eliminating Negatives."
Using Mind Power techniques and eliminating negatives will make an immense difference to your attitude, and as a result your life will change.
Q My father is dying, and I have been involved in his medical treatment for 4 years. Now that he is in his last days, I feel happy, comfortable and relieved that this is nearly over. I am not particularly upset, as this has been some time coming and I grieved several years ago for him. But now everyone around me is telling me that I am not reacting normally (I agree, I am not). The way I feel seems appropriate for me, however, as my Dad is not in pain and has peace of mind. I am not concerned about what others think, but I suppose I am questioning if in some way mind powers have made me a bit insensitive. Maybe everyone else should do mind powers...
Wellington, New Zealand
A You sound very normal and sensitive to me. You have come to peace with a very prolonged and tragic situation. Congratulations on handling the situation with such maturity. You are wise to not be concerned with what others think. If you are at peace in your own mind, then all is well.
Q I'm a 26-year-old (male) businessman. My problem is that I'm very sensitive and get frustrated with small things. I don't have a good physique. I'm also afraid of future competition (which is very tough). I just got married last month and I'm also tense about fulfilling the needs of my wife and future family. I want to cheer up, have a good physique, and earn a lot of money to live happily. I want to become mentally and physically strong.
Punjab, India
A You've told me what you want. Now tell me what you're going to do to achieve it. Are you expecting it to happen magically? Do you think you will simply wake up one morning and all will be as you hope with no effort on your part? Knowing what one wants is a good first step, but the second and more difficult step is doing what needs to be done in order to achieve it.
Mind Power will assist you in achieving your goals, but you must set up a daily program and do it. From this practice all will be revealed to you, and you will know and understand what needs to be done to achieve your goals. Begin today.
Q I have recently read Mindpower into the 21st Century and, being keen to use these techniques, started seeding, visualising and attempting to stimulate my subconscious prior to going to sleep at night. (As I have two young and noisy children, late evening is the only regular slot for such pursuits). However I immediately hit a problem, in that every time I follow your suggestions, I have a very poor and disturbed night's sleep. This is despite feeling very relaxed and well for having completed your exercises. If I wake up during the night I feel really "wired" - as if I had drank lots of coffee during the day, which of course I had not. Have you encountered this problem before? I would really like to follow your program, as I am at a very exciting crossroads in my life. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Mullumbimby, Australia
A I'm not sure why you're having poor and disturbed sleeps. However, I suggest that when you finish your exercises and are feeling tired and ready to fall off to sleep, repeat to yourself a number of times, "Tonight I will sleep fully and soundly and wake up refreshed and alert." Giving yourself this suggestion should work well.
Q I've found numerous questions in your archives about pursuing a number of different goals at once, and your philosophy with regard to the same. What I did not find was the technique to use. If I have five different and unrelated goals (spiritual, physical, relationship, business, financial) that I have written down, how do I apply the mind power practice? To vividly visualize all these goals at once would take an hour at least. Is it easier to break it up and so visualize five different times a day for five minutes with each session devoted to only one goal? Also, I am experiencing difficulty in feeling the feelings i.e., seeding. Any suggestions? Thanks for all your sage advice.
Carlsbad, California
A You can have a general visualization and affirmation that includes all aspects of your life going well. For example the affirmation, "I have great success in all areas of my life," covers everything. But it is also wise to do specific ones. Here you must pick one or two to focus on. In any given year, providing you spend sixty days doing two goals at a time, you can achieve twelve different goals. But don't try and do everything at once. Prioritize and build your new life brick by brick, belief by belief, goal by goal. This is a more effective way to achieve your goals.
Two other points I want to take this opportunity to make. Firstly, I'm glad you've discovered the archives. There is a wealth of information there, and often viewers of this site do not use it as much as they could. Congratulations on spending time there. Secondly, there are two sources of information that every Mind Power student should have and use as a bare minimum - the book Mind Power into the 21st Century, and the DVD "Setting up a Mind Power Program." Having these two explains so much.
Q I am a 29-year-old married man. The problem with me is that I have a poor self-image, and this poor self-image stops me from doing many things that so-called normal' people would do.
From my own analysis, I have found that it's my short stature (I am 5'6") that is the most important reason for this poor self-image. I see myself as someone who is inferior to others in all aspects of life, but at the same time I have the desire to do all the things that a normal person does. I feel that society doesn't like me behaving as equal to taller people. I also feel that because of my short stature people wouldn't respect me and my opinions. This has resulted in avoidance behaviour. So, I have this dilemma ... should my height affect the way I think, behave and lead my life? Should I hold myself back because of my short stature? I am not sure how far this short stature affects my goals in life. I want to know the reality please. Thank you.
USA
A All your problems and issues about your height are in your mind. This is both good and bad. Bad because you have convinced yourself that your height is the cause of many of your problems, and believing this, you have projected this belief into your relationships and are getting the appropriate feedback. "As a man thinkest, so is he." The good news is that since it is all in the mind, you can change it. A new life is but a new mind. So start changing these limiting beliefs. There are countless millions of people of your height and shorter who have successful happy lives. Where did you get such a faulty limiting belief? It is certainly not based on fact.
What you need to do is start focusing on your positive qualities, and expecting people to admire and respect you for these qualities. Begin recreating your self-image using mind power techniques. Once you have done this, all will unfold for you in the most exciting ways.
But first you must practice mind power to eliminate all those limiting beliefs.
