Q I am beginning to put into practice your mind power techniques along with Deepak Chopra's Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. I find the two, your book and his, go well together. Anyway, I have a concern in visualizing my goal - am I putting in too much detail? My passion and goal is to get consistent, professional, paid acting and voice animation work (though I am a professional actor, work has been slow for me the last six months - my last acting job was in September 1999). I see myself doing both these things (see myself on set or in the studio), and then I also sometimes get details of things like the director saying "The Producers loved your work yesterday," or "We'll see you tomorrow for scene." Is this too much?
Also I visualize my bank balance being quite high, as financial freedom is a personal goal of mine (I am eager to break free from poverty consciousness). I also visualize myself on a trip I want to take in the fall to Hawaii for a workshop.
So I have no problem seeing many details, hearing words said to me, feeling all the feelings (seeding), but I am concerned that I am asking for too much and evoking too much detail. Should I be focusing on "a successful acting career" and trust that financial freedom and details and being able to afford the trip will all come, or can I stick with the details? I should add that I love the details and I feel fantastic when I am doing the visualizing. And then when I am done my 5-10 minutes, I let it go and move through my day staying open and present minded. I appreciate your help with this. I am just a grasshopper in these new Mind Power Techniques.
Vancouver, Canada
A There are two points that I wish to address in your questions. First of all, the aspect of details: What you're doing is absolutely right. You must put in as much detail as possible, seeing and feeling yourself having and being what it is that you want. Also, it's a good idea to vary the details so that the mind does not become sluggish and lazy. The mind likes variety. So regarding this aspect of your question, I think you're doing everything right.
In answer to the second part of your question, let me say that there's an old maxim: "You crawl before you walk, and you walk before you run." One of the mistakes that people make when they first begin to work with mind powers is that they try to do everything all at once. You cannot have twenty-five goals working with mind powers. If you try to work on too many things simultaneously, especially at the beginning stages, what happens is that you just disperse your energy. Better to pick two or three things that are very important to you and begin working on them. And then when you achieve them you can work on other things as well. You're not limited to just one goal. And by all means, you want to work on many things simultaneously, but really you have to prioritize and make decisions. Pick the things that are most important to you. Work on them first.
Q I get excellent results from using affirmations, but I don't really use any other Mind Power techniques. Can I just stick with affirmations?
A Whatever works for you is fine. I'm a big believer in results. You must judge every system or technique by asking, "How well does it produce for me?" If it works for you, and you're getting results, then that's fabulous. Scott Adams, the creator of the hit cartoon, Dilbert, talks about what tremendous success he has had in his life simply by writing out affirmations fifteen times daily. And I know other people who have had great success in their life working only with affirmations. But having said that, I certainly strongly recommend that you explore the other Mind Power techniques as well, because you'll probably find other excellent techniques that you can use in your life and master very easily and effectively. So if you want to stick with just using affirmations and you feel that you're getting results with it, then that is fine. But the more diversity that you have in working with Mind Powers the more effective you will be. Plus you will want to learn about the subconscious and intuition and success vibration and interpreting dreams, and all the different areas that you can begin to study and master, working with Mind Powers.
Q Being a student of mind power, I need your advice on a dream that I had. I have set myself a goal to purchase a car, but I had this dream that I actually said to myself that there was no way I could do it because of the current circumstances in my life. John, please, if you could help me with this issue I would really appreciate it.
Johannesburg South Africa
A Dreams are the language of the subconscious and while not every dream is a message to us, every dream deserves to be looked at and pondered. "What is it trying to tell me?" you ask yourself. How did you feel during the dream? This is also a clue to its meaning. Were you relieved that you were not going to get the car, or disappointed? What part of you was saying, "There is no way I can do it?" You could re-enact the dream and ask the dream character why she is saying that.
The dream is probably (and I use the world probably, because dream interpretation is more a matter of feeling your way to an answer than an exact science) advising you that at this point in your life a new car is not your highest priority, or that something within you has reservations about it, and this something needs looking at before you will be able to manifest it.
Q I really appreciate your work and I think it's going to help a lot of people, including myself. I am working on imprinting a new belief about me being very successful, and I have been using both affirmations and visualization. Is it all right to do more than one affirmation about a belief? My affirmations regarding my new belief on success are: I can succeed in anything. I am tremendously successful. I am bound to succeed. I keep repeating them to myself, taking each one at a time for about a minute. Then after I finish the first belief, I work on another belief. I'm working on two beliefs each month. I hope I'm doing this right. I look forward to your reply. Thanks.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
A Most definitely you can have more than one affirmation for each new belief. In fact, having two or three different affirmations on the same belief can have a cumulative effect. Also, the mind likes diversity and sometimes it can simply get boring repeatedly using the same affirmation. As well, affirmations have to "feel" right for you. Let me tinker with one of your affirmations a bit. "I am bound to succeed" could be changed to "I am succeeding." Then make an acknowledging list of where you are succeeding in little areas of your life, so that when you say this it rings true for you and makes it even more powerful. You're doing everything right. Well done.
Q If our thoughts are so powerful they can even affect others, as has been documented by research on prayer, how can we defend ourselves against negative thoughts another person may be having about us?
Manhattan, KS
A If you believe you need protection from someone, guess what! You need protection. The principal at work here is that the universe perfectly reflects back to us our beliefs, desires, fears and what we focus and think about. Rather than trying to protect yourself just work with thoughts of love and well being. Confidence, joy, fun, love, feeling these sensations and working with this energy is all the protection you need.
Q Are long-held negative beliefs powerful enough to stop mind powers from working?
Perth, Australia
A The beliefs you have within influence the way you see the world and also attract the conditions you experience. So long-held negative beliefs most certainly will hinder mind powers working for you. It's like taking two steps ahead and three back. Read the chapter on Beliefs and Imprinting in Mind Power Into the 21st Century. Work on changing your negative beliefs. Whether negative beliefs are recently formed or long held, they can be changed by persistently practicing the techniques in the book.
Q If our thoughts are so powerful they can even affect others, as has been documented by research on prayer, how can we defend ourselves against negative thoughts another person may be having about us?
Manhattan, Kansas, USA
A You have no need to defend yourself against negative thoughts another person may have about you. You have only to defend yourself against the negative thoughts you yourself have. If you are maintaining your psyche with the highest thoughts and beliefs and think well of yourself and others, all will be fine.
Q I bought your book "Mind Power" and found your life story inspiring. I thought I'd followed your procedures for years but suddenly lost my job on my 50th birthday. I wonder if you have any thoughts on how the thoughts of others can effect others. eg. praying for another. I enjoy your work and your clear writing on the subject. I often think I could write a book on how uncertain life seems, yet somehow I know I will be successful again. Thank you and keep up the good work!

A The thoughts and images you have of others and that others have of you do have an effect, especially if you have an emotional bond with those others (family, a good friend, etc.). I advise parents and marriage partners to assist their children and spouses by creating positive mental images of them-seeing them achieving the best in their lives. Ultimately of course, the images and beliefs that each person has are the number one factor in creating their reality, but others' thoughts help too.
Prayer has been found to be very effective in helping others. Dr. Larry Possey, a medical doctor, has done many studies on the power of prayer to help cure illness. What he found is that it doesn't matter whether the prayer is Christian, Buddhist , Hindu or Muslim, the effect is equally positive. The most important factor seems to be that love and compassion are used while praying. Thanks for your positive feedback and I'm sure that you will find another position, perhaps something even more suitable than the previous one. Life works in strange ways, but as the Rolling Stones said, "You don't always get what you want, but you get what you need."
Q I would like to know something about relationships. I love a girl badly and probably she also loves me but we have never acknowledged our feelings. We belong to different castes. In India this matters. I have started doing affirmations so as to win my love. I want to know whether I should pray (affirm) for my perfect match rather than affirming for the girl whom I love. I'm wondering whether one should judge about the perfectness of a relationship.
India
A Ah . . . love! Before I answer you, let me say I've traveled to your country and enjoyed it immensely. My wife and I plan to return soon. In affairs of the heart one must go within and trust the inner feeling, the inner knowing. Note that this is not the same as the emotions. The emotions always want what is right in front of us. I do not know if this is the right girl for you, but, deep within, you know. Go within and ask your subconscious. The answer is there.
Q I recognise that I have very creative and artistic talents, but this creates so many career options that I don't know which to choose. Can you offer suggestions that will help me settle into one field when I have so many that I love?
Whangarei, New Zealand
A The answer is simple. Follow your heart and do what most excites you. Almost every successful person has found a passion, something they believe in, and then pursued it. One never knows how or in what direction a life will unfold. Often we begin in one area, which then leads to another, and then again to still another. Following your instinct and passion always le ps to an interesting and fulfilling life.
I suggest you read the chapters "Follow the Call" and "Trusting Life," in The Practice of Happiness.
Q This is a question I'm asking all my readers: "Do you know any children between ages 3 to 12? The reason I'm asking is that I'm releasing a new book this month in North America, and in September worldwide. The title, Mind Power for Children.
It is based upon the very successful Mind Power for Children program that has been taught worldwide for over ten years, based upon my teachings. If you are a parent, teacher, uncle, aunt, grandfather or grandmother, coach or family friend to a child in this age group, this book is an invaluable resource and teaching tool. Check out the site for more details. Teaching children these techniques early gives them a discernable advantage. We all must take a role in assisting the children we know. Everyone, not just parents, can play a role.

Q I recently quit working for a company in Japan where I had worked for eight months after graduating from a university in Russia, because I did not like it. Now I live at home with my parents (in Japan), thinking about what I shall do in future. The problem is that I want to become successful, well known, wealthy and outstanding. (In John Lennon's words, a superstar!) However, I am no actor or singer. I'm an ordinary person who, so far, cannot be the one I want to be (no experience, no connections). So the question is: is it good to practise visualization, seeding and other techniques thinking as if I were a singer or an actor (i.e., a star), or should I start with more realistic thoughts (passing an exam or meeting someone who might help me)?
Tokyo, Japan
A You can be a superstar in life without putting too much pressure on yourself to be someone outstanding. Relax and enjoy your life. You're young, with tremendous opportunities in front of you. Your real question should be, "What is my passion?" You will never be tremendously successful at anything you don't have great enthusiasm for. So the first thing - find your passion. I suggest you read the past topic of the month, "Follow the Call." It is from my book, The Practice of Happiness, and will answer many of your questions.
Discover your passion and you have discovered your path to an interesting and fulfilling life.
Q John, I've written in before with this question, and realizing how much email you are faced with each month, I certainly understand that you cannot always answer every one. I'm writing again in the hope that you might be able to respond this particular time, because your response to my question will truly be a turning point in my life right now, as I'm at a critical fork in the road.
So here's my question: I'm a self-employed therapist, devoted to the empowerment of my clients. As you are well aware, we live in a turbulent financial climate today, and my goal is that of providing the best care and attention to my clients, as I provide both psychological, and medical care. Self-employed professionals, while their goal is noble, must also deal with the issue of personal financial well-being for themselves and their family, so as to not have the lack of this well-being interfere with the help they provide their clients.
I read your book and found it to be so very inspirational and empowering. I have also read some others that speak of creating financial abundance by imprinting abundance for several minutes a day, so as to bring it about in your life by means beyond our understanding. While I want very much to embrace this idea, and allow the universe to provide a secure financial environment for us while I devote my efforts to my clients,
I am constantly rained on with a series of "work at home" offers and other ideas to become financially sound. As well, other therapists in my field are also seeking alternate forms of earnings to supplement their income during slow periods in our work.
John, with the knowledge contained in your book, and the ability our minds possess to attract and create, do you feel that someone in my position should best spend his energies imprinting abundance, and lean upon the creative intelligence within, rather than spreading myself thin, as others are forced to do who are not familiar with the power of the mind?
New York, USA
A Yes, I do receive a lot of email and I read each and pray and send good thoughts to everyone who emails me. Unfortunately I can't answer them all, but my thoughts are with everyone who corresponds with me.
Regarding your question, there are many ways to become financially well off in the field of your choice. I am always amazed at how ordinary people in everyday situations turn their lives around when they grasp and practice the principles of abundance (See my book entitled Money, Success & You).
In your particular situation my advise would be to do what you love doing while practicing the principles of abundance. Create a prosperity consciousness and use mind power daily, and money will flow to you. You will attract more clients - more than you can - and ideas will come to you on how to manifest money. Maybe you will teach workshops or maybe you'll write a book that becomes a bestseller. It is hard to tell exactly how it will unfold for you, but it will unfold.
Devote yourself to what you love, become the very best at it, and vibrate success and abundance. The universe will supply the rest. Synchronicity will bring you the right people, circumstances and events to prosper.
Q Would you please be so kind as to share with me, a thought or two on the subject of levitation, astral travel, and your opinion on spiritual healing? I have been studying the art of spiritual healing for quite some time and still find it very hard to do distant healing.
Unknown
A I know nothing about levitation. Astral traveling is using your mind to project itself into whatever place you can conceive of. I don't have too much to offer here either. However, about spiritual healing I can give some advice.
When disease shows up in the physical body the cause can be physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. A blockage of energy in any of these areas can show up as disease in the body. (I talk about this in my Health and Healing CD.)
Spiritual healing is being aware of this dynamic and working at healing the spiritual aspects. For example, someone who thinks only of himself and has no feelings for others is lacking in the spiritual aspect of compassion. You might say that this is a mental or emotional malfunction, but let's not split hairs. Compassion for others is a spiritual function, and if it is lacking it will cause a blockage of energy within us. We are multi-dimensional beings with minds, bodies, emotions, thoughts and a soul. The soul could be starved of the nurturing energy of compassion.
Spiritual healing for others is done through prayer, intuition and positive thoughts. You first intuit where the problem might be, then help the person being healed to understand where their spiritual deficiency might be and what it could be doing to them. Providing they are receptive and you are not too arrogant or know-it-all in your attitude, some movement can be made. Prayer is a powerful spiritual energy and it too can work wonders, even without the other person being present.
I hope this helps, and this question makes me realize that this would be a good future topic of the month
Q I thought you might find this interesting. In your writings, you state that thoughts make physical and measurable changes to people, though you do not put it quite this way.
I watched a film, Instinct (with Anthony Hopkins) that featured the gorillas of central Africa. The dominant male has a silver back which announces to the whole troupe that he is the leader and not to be messed with. If he is deposed by another male, he loses the silver colouring on his back and his adversary develops silver hair, and all because of what he thinks - truly amazing.
Thank you for your great work.
South Africa
A Thank you for sharing this example. I was not aware of this phenomenon, but you're right, it illustrates very dramatically how our thoughts affect our outer reality. Interestingly enough, my wife and I have traveled to Uganda and spend a brief time with the gorillas a number of years ago.
