Q I've been using an affirmation in which, prior to going to sleep and immediately upon awaking, I say to myself for two minutes, "Every day in every way, I'm getting stronger and more confident and healthy and successful." Now I'd like to know if I should shorten that into fewer words. Also I'd like to know if just saying this phrase would tap into my subconscious, or do I also need to use a visionary technique with this?
Sunrise, Florida
A Your affirmation "Every day in every way I'm getting stronger and more confident and healthy and successful," is an excellent affirmation. There is no need to shorten it into fewer words. It is short and concise as it is. If you want, however, sometimes you can just emphasize certain aspects of the affirmation. For example, you might want to just say, "confident, healthy, successful," and repeat them over and over again. Or you might want to emphasize the words "every day in every way." But however you do it, this affirmation will give you excellent results.
People get fabulous results from affirmations. You say that you do them two minutes before you go to sleep, and two minutes upon arising. That in itself is a powerful imprinting factor, and will naturally harness the subconscious mind. You do not necessarily have to use a visualization technique with it. However, if you choose to, you might find yourself getting even more benefit by taking maybe five minutes and visualizing yourself as confident, healthy and successful. However, that is not necessary. If you're comfortable just doing the affirmations, then stick with them and you will have great results.
Q I have been practising the techniques I learned in your Mind Power course for about a year now with great success. Does one have to do the daily exercises for the rest of one's life in order to achieve goals or does Mind Power eventually become a way of thinking and merely setting the goals is sufficient?
Victoria, Canada
A Congratulations from the great success that you are receiving from your Mind Power exercises. Regarding whether one has to do the daily exercises for the rest of one's life, no, you do not. What you will find is that this does become, as you put it, your way of thinking. You find that you are naturally thinking in a positive way, you are naturally imagining, visualizing, affirming your goals. Now having said this, this is not to say that you won't have times where for specific goals you are using mind powers daily. But really what you're looking to do is change your consciousness and eventually this becomes natural within oneself. Once again, congratulations on your great success and you have just begun to achieve great things in your life.
Q I just finished reading your book Mind Power, so I am new but very interested. There are a lot of things I want to put my mind to. Where do I start? Do I concentrate on all subjects, or do I take one at a time? I also dreamt about sweeping sand the other night, and last night I dreamt about sand again. I don't remember the dream, just know about sand because while I was dreaming I thought, "I am dreaming about sand again."
Walvis Bay, Namibia
A Let me first of all say that I have been to Walvis Bay in Namibia, and Namibia is certainly one of the most beautiful countries in the world. We try to go there whenever we tour down in South Africa. So congratulations on living in such a beautiful country.
Regarding where does one begin? I would suggest that you reread the Mind Power book several times so that you understand all the principles and techniques and methods, and then allot yourself a certain amount of time, whether it be fifteen minutes or whether it be a half hour, and begin a daily program to create in your life what it is that you desire. It can be something to do with finances, it can be to do with health, or relationships, whatever, but pick a goal and then achieve it. I would suggest starting with smaller goals rather than, say, trying to pick as your first goal to become a multimillionaire. If finances are an issue with you, then you would pick smaller goals to prove to yourself that Mind Powers work. What you want to do is build up confidence in this system.
You also say that you were dreaming about sweeping sand the other night. In fact it was a reoccurring dream. Keep a dream journal and write down all your dreams and all the details. What you'll find is that there are symbols there for you to decipher. One of the possible symbols of shifting sand is that things are shifting in your life, that there are changes happening in your life. Ultimately, you the dreamer will know what this dream means. But if you keep a dream journal and regularly look at it you'll find that the subconscious is giving you very valuable information.
I'm glad that you have discovered Mind Power and I welcome to you to this exhilarating experience of creating and manifesting in your life.
Q Can mind power be applied to external circumstances, other people, their behaviour or situation other than yourself? Say if, a relative or a friend is in a coma or terminal illness, can you apply YOUR Mind Power to turn around his/her situation? Have you come across testimonies of successful application of the above among your students?
Singapore
A This is not an easy question to answer. Ultimately each person has their own destiny, and that has everything to do with their energy and vibration. Can we help other people? Certainly there is enough evidence to prove that prayer and love and concern can indeed help another individual. So what I would suggest is if you have a relative or friend who has a terminal illness, spend time each day using your mind power to help and assist them. We are in a grey area here, where there is not a clear-cut answer on what works and what doesn't. But it certainly won't hurt, and the energy of love and concern from friends and family is always of assistance to an individual.
You might be interested in a recent success story from another e-mail correspondent:
"A personal story of one of my associates might interest you. Her son was involved in a head-on car crash just over a week ago. While he was under intensive care and unconscious, she whispered in his ear every hour a positive affirmation: "In every way, every day, my body is healing, my bones are growing back together, and I am getting better and better." When he awoke, he looked at his Mom, who asked how he was feeling. He first asked her where she had been, and she told him that she had been there with him the whole time. Then, in response to the question of how he was feeling, he looked at his mom and told her he would be fine because... and he repeated to her nearly word for word the affirmation she had been whispering in his ear while he was unconscious. She was shocked. The doctors say he is recovering nicely, will be walking again in 6 months, and they sent him home to begin his rehabilitation this week."
Q I have set myself high goals and some intermediate goals leading up to the bigger goals, and I have been very religious in doing the exercises without missing a day for about a year. Yes, I have seen changes, but some of the changes seem strange, like I find myself setting weekly goals, like making my bed every day and washing the dishes, as normally I am an untidy person. The other thing is I'm not a punctual person, but all of a sudden it has become an obsession to be on time, and on a weekly basis I chart myself. Accordingly, would you say this is the subconscious's way of preparing me for my goals?
The other question is, is it true that the longer the left the bigger the right? What I mean is, when you do the exercises for a long time with hardly any results, when you do start seeing results, are they normally big?
And my last question relates to one of my goals which was that my back would be healed of a slipped disc which the doctors said I would have to have an operation on. Well, now one year down the line, my back is 99% healed, but what was strange is that it got far worse before it got better. Now I'm going through the same with my finances, as one of my goals is money, but unexpected costs keep arising. I must be honest, I truly have not lost faith, as I know this is circumstance and inner controls the outer, but is there some sort of explanation for all this?
South Africa
A Congratulations on your changes, some of them small and some of them large. It sounds like you are working well with mind powers. You're absolutely right that sometimes things do get worse before they get better. The reason for this is simple. Because of the energy and vibration that we have built up in the past, we need to have these experiences in our life before we can move on to new ones. So just continue with your exercises and you will soon be doing fine.
Q John, I'm putting together a list of qualities and attributes for the ideal mate. How important is the language of the information? Such as: I want someone who... or she will have... or I will have a mate who... Does it matter how I ask?
Atlanta, GA
A The language you use is not important at all. What is important are the images that you have in your mind. And when you're projecting for your ideal mate, include all the things that are important to you and what you want in a partner. However, allow yourself flexibility and surprises as well, so that you aren't so rigid that you exclude other people that might be slightly different from what it is that you want. As for the qualities that you want, visualize, affirm, use your mind powers, and this will attract that person to you.
I look forward to hearing about your new mate.
Q I have been trying to break down old patterns of negativity. I was raised in quite a negative environment. What can I do?
A If you've been raised in a negative environment, then undoubtedly you have negative beliefs about yourself and the world you live in. And this is extremely unfortunate. But at a certain point in our life, we must take responsibility for our life and let the past be the past. There's no question that a child who is raised in a positive environment - who is taught to believe in herself or himself, who is taught that she or he can do anything, and taught that she or he has creativity - that child will have an enhanced sense of self-esteem as she or he grows into an adult. These beliefs and feelings of self-worth and of competence will carry through into his or her adult life, just as will the opposite sorts of beliefs. But luckily for us at any point in our life we can take a stand. It doesn't matter if you've been raised in a dysfunctional family, doesn't matter what your past record of success or failure has been, what you need to do is you need to examine your thoughts and your beliefs and take responsibility for them right now. If you look at the Topic of the Month for September, you will find techniques for eliminating negatives from our mind. So begin by working with these techniques and begin by working on your self-image and confidence. What you'll find is that with Mind Powers you will completely turn around your negative environment and become a very confident, self-fulfilled person. If you are committed to your personal growth, even ten minutes a day using these methods will produce excellent results.
Q How can a person overcome a problem caused by others? I had a best friend who I thought was an angel and she turned out to be the devil incarnate. I was deeply hurt and have lost trust in people. What to do? And how can I overcome the pain and shock from this lost friendship? It's affecting my life. I trusted her strongly and then realized that she was only after my money and was living a cheap lifestyle with seven different relationships with guys, all because of money. I am in shock.
Dubai
A While problems might appear to come from others you are metaphysically on safer ground by assuming that everything that happens to you has its cause within you. The real question is why did you attract such a person in your life? Do you have self-confidence in yourself, or do you see your money as part of your self-worth?
Losing trust in people is not a logical way of reacting to this. There are millions of wonderful people who would love to have a meaningful and beautiful relationship with someone like you. If this is a one-of experience, I would advise to forget it and move on. If you have a pattern of attracting these types of women, then look within and discover why. Learn whatever lessons this has taught you, and move on to a new more fulfilling relationship.
Q We are so sure of our outcome that our whole life and current living experience is based around believing in a very powerful pending experience. It's as if much of our day-to-day living and future-based planning assumes it has already happened. Is there any harm in living inside the belief of a reality outcome more than living outside of it?
Calgary Alberta
A Your faith and assurance of this future outcome is a powerful vibration and it is attracting to you that situation. However, be sure to allow yourself the joy and wonder of each day's experiences as it unfolds. You should not be thinking of your goal every moment of every day. Set aside a mind power period and use the techniques during that twenty- or thirty-minute period.
It is only natural that you will be excited and think of the goal throughout the day. But life is for living. But make sure each day is full and enjoyable and that you appreciate what is happening NOW in your life.
Q My question is about affirmations: I'm a freelance writer who is having difficulty finding work - specifically, finding clients who appreciate writing that is concise as well as creative. I'm trying to carve out a niche for myself as a web site writer - there's so much room for improvement in this medium - but clear writing doesn't seem to be a priority. Is the affirmation: "There is great demand for my skills," too general? Should I add: "...by people who appreciate first-class work?" In your book you suggest keeping affirmations as short as possible, and I agree. I like to repeat them in my mind (between strokes) while swimming laps. Any advice would be most appreciated. Keep up the good work.
West Vancouver, BC
A Your first affirmation can be improved upon. Just because there is a great demand for your work (and I'm sure there is) doesn't mean you're going to connect with it. How about:
1. "My work is appreciated and I'm paid well for it."
2. " I have lots of work and people appreciate my talent."
3. "I attract quality clients."
4. "Clients recognize the quality of my work and are lining up to work with me."
5. "I do quality work and attract quality clients."
Q I read Mr. Kehoe's book until I got to the part where he described holograms. He doesn't understand what a hologram is. If he doesn't understand that, what else doesn't he understand?
Somerset, NJ
A The whole concept of our life being holographic and reality being multidimensional I find fascinating. That we live in a holographic universe with numerous possible realities existing at every point of time is indeed a concept difficult to comprehend, for in many ways it defies our senses. But reality is more mysterious than our understanding of it. In Mind Power Into the 21st Century I've attempted to give a simplistic explanation of how it works. Obviously you disagree. What do you disagree with? Give me a better explanation and if it's written simply, easily understood and better explained than I have done, I'll post it on the site in the next month or two.
Q I would like to thank you for writing your books. I was recently in Charlotte, NC in a Barnes & Nobel Bookstore looking for some books by Dan Millman and your book on Mind Power jumped out in to my hands. I too believe in spiritual power and the power of the subconscious. I loved the book. I'm working in a factory in corporate America, which is a negative place where everyone worries about everybody else and has bad attitudes. I was hurt at work, which was a blessing. This gave me the time and opportunity to read your books, set goals, do affirmations, and to read in the middle of the night when everything is peaceful and serene. I also go out early in the morning to a cow pasture through the woods to meditate and pray. I have been trying to decide to quit my job. I have started a business at home with an MLM company selling health supplements and have not yet made it financially, but know I can. I just came back from my meditation and decided to read your monthly topic for July. It was great and inspiring! Follow the call was what I needed to read. Well, like you I have till July 28 to see if I walk through that door or not. My dreams are also telling me to go for it. But my conservative financial side is still questioning my desires. I would just like to say thank you for your books and I can't wait to read your next book (The Seven Secrets of Happiness). Thanks,
Rome, New York
A By the time this months topic is posted, you will have taken a fork in your road of destiny. Neither I nor the website readers will know what you have done, but I will take the liberty of speaking on behalf of all of us who follow this website, and wish you well. Life gives us continuous opportunities to make choices that will help bring us into greater harmony and bless our life.
Q I recently read a few books that claim that the only truly effective way to visualize is to visualize in a manner that seems like you're in the picture instead of seeing yourself in the picture. Most books on visualization I've read state that you should see yourself in the picture. Nothing's really ever mentioned about seeing things in the picture as if they're actually happening around you. Is this really a better way to visualize? Is there a "true" way to visualize? Also, I checked out a couple of Emile Cou's books through my local library. He states that simply relaxing and letting the mind wander while stating an affirmation will do the trick. Is this sort of what you meant when you said a person didn't necessarily have to believe the affirmation is true? Also, I read that an affirmation is best stated in a monotone voice or by singing it as lyrics to a song. Is there a best way for saying affirmations?
Wisconsin
A Firstly there is no "true" way to visualize in the sense that all the techniques you mentioned are effective and can be used in combination with each other. The subconscious mind will naturally pick up the vibrations so long as you're doing it consistently and regularly. Do what feels right to you. Sometimes let your mind wander. Sometimes see the picture clearly. Secondly, the tone of voice has no effect or bearing. If you want to sing it, great. Say it in whatever voice you want. If you want to say it quietly to yourself, that's fine too. Writing it down over and over can also be effective. All these techniques will work well.
Q I have been interested in mind power for many years, and while I truly want to believe that we are responsible for moulding our own futures, I do have questions which cause me to doubt. The first area I question is health. Can we really prevent illness or cure ourselves simply through mind power? Is it really that simple? If it is, why doesn't everyone do it, and why isn't it promoted by medical practitioners? (although I realise their income would be severely reduced if everyone adopted the practice!)
If we are totally in control of our futures, why do events happen seemingly out of the blue? Fatalists believe that their futures are mapped out for them, which obviously is the opposite reasoning to mind power. So who is right? Please shed some light on my queries before I drive myself mad!
New Zealand
A Firstly let me say that there are no absolutes in life. Mind Power does not give you "total control" of your future. It gives you tools, methods, techniques for changing and influencing what happens to you. It is very powerful and very effective. Millions use it everyday with excellent results. Contrary to what you think, many medical practitioners actively promote the use of the mind in healing. The role of the mind in healing is now taught in many of the medical universities, and has been written about extensively in medical journals. Next month (December) in my topic of the month, I will share with you an amazing story of a woman who used her mind to heal herself from cancer.
Q How do you feel about a person visualizing and affirming to win a Powerball Lottery Jackpot? Even though the odds of winning are 1:120 million, can't a person still succeed in this endeavour? After all, the subconscious has NO limits! What are your thoughts on this? Have any of your readers/students won a lottery? Thanks John.
WI, USA
A By all means buy a lottery ticket if you want to, but I wouldn't suggest using mind power to win. The reason is simple. There are millions of other people also hoping and praying for the same result. Why try for something that is 1:120 million? Use Mind Power to create financial abundance in other more promising ways, rather than limiting it to just the lottery.
