Monthly Mind Power Questions & Answers

October 2006

Q First, I want to thank you for writing clearly and simply about a potentially confusing topic. Here is my question: An obstacle to using my intuition is being able to distinguish between fears and "wishful thinking" on one hand, and intuitively valid information the other. For example, I will have a thought, then "second guess" myself with "that's just fear talking" or "that's just wishful thinking". Comments?

Colorado Springs, USA

A When you begin using your intuition there is a very common stumbling block that we have to distinguish: is the advice we're receiving real and authentic or is it just wishful thinking? And in the beginning stages of working with intuition and the subconscious you will go through these feelings. What you have to do is just work through them. The more you become familiar with your intuition, the more you work with it on a regular basis, the more you will begin to notice the difference. When intuition is working for us it has a real authenticity to it. It just feels right. With intuition there is a distinct knowing that is different from our other thoughts, but this only comes with practice.

So practice the techniques that I mention with the subconscious and treat it as a friend. Go to it daily. Don't concern yourself if sometimes you're confused about whether it is real or not. Because the more you go to it, the more you practice with it, the more you tap into it, the more you will recognize the authenticity of your intuition when it is actually happening for you. So while you are right, there is an initial obstacle in working with it, it is a small obstacle and will be surmounted by those who persist.

Q I'm having a midlife crisis. How should I use Mind Power to get over it?

A A midlife crisis is a wonderful thing to have happen to you. It is the psyche's way, at the midpoint in our life, of forcing us to examine our values, our goals, what it is we have chosen for ourselves in life. And it's great that the psyche shakes us up and makes us examine what is important to us, what is important to a life. Am I living my life in the right way? Am I doing the things that I should be doing? What could I be doing more of or less of? All these are very valuable and important questions. So rather than responding negatively to your midlife crisis, use it as a time to closely examine what is happening in your life. Examining our life in honest self-reflection almost always produces valuable insights. Too often we're too busy to take the time to do this. A midlife crisis forces us to do so and that's why it's so valuable. Now I'm not saying that a midlife crisis is pleasant. It's not pleasant at all. But nonetheless the alchemy produced by it and the insights that one gains by correctly going through it tend to be very valuable. So change your attitude towards your midlife crisis and look at it as an excellent opportunity to make some changes. It's actually a very good thing.

Q In your Health & Healing seminar last October you mentioned that "forgiving is the antidote for hatred," which I believe is true! This being the case, how do you handle the "forget" part that usually comes attached to hatred? The quotation that you offer on page 112 of your book Money Success & You just seems to be so inspiring, yet I think "looking around in awareness" in effect means "don't forget." Are Forgive and Forget mutually exclusive, or can they both occur at the same time? If they can occur at the same time, then is there a way to prevent the "don't forget" part from getting in the way of forgiving?
Burnaby, Canada

A I will repeat the quote you referred to from Money Success & You: "Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness." When you forgive someone for a perceived injustice (Remember that we tend to interpret reality in our favour, especially when we think we have been offended in some way.), it doesn't mean you forget. The incident, whatever it may be, happened, and to try to pretend it didn't is ridiculous. One does not have to forget the incident to remove the charge from it. You will know you have truly forgiven when you can recall the incident with either humour or indifference. If when you think of the incident you become angry, hurt or upset, then you have not forgiven and moved on. The incident still has power over you. Forgiving a person means moving on. It means you have resolved the conflict in some way in your mind. There has been some closure within you. You don't have to try to forget it because it no longer affects you. It is just one of thousands of memories. Sometimes you will think about it, but for the most part it is gone. Remember too that forgiving is a healing for yourself. It has nothing to do with the other person. It has to do with cleansing your own consciousness of the harmful residue that hate creates. Q I've just read your book for the first time, but I have not started practicing what I have read yet. Which is the best thing to start off first with, which is easy? I already have a feeling that this book is really going to change my life for the good, and I only read it once. I know this book can work me, so your suggestion would be very helpful, thank you.

Somerville, MA

A Mind Power is a practice not a philosophy. While you can be inspired by reading the book, this pales in comparison to what happens when you practice the techniques regularly. And it doesn't take long to see results. I suggest you reread the book, taking notes, and practice the techniques that appeal to you the most.

Affirmations and Acknowledging are two very easy techniques that you can incorporate into your life immediately.

I also strongly recommend the "Setting up a Mind Power Program" tape. It is an excellent tape for those who wish to master this great science.

Q Hi John. I sent you a question in May about affirmation giving negative results,
but I rojek I found the answer myself. The original question is included at the end of this.
A sudden eye disease put me into a depression as I went almost blind in one eye very quickly, and then I found a "support" group on the internet with people having the similar disease for years and discussing all the aspects of it. And the general tone was that this disease is for life and usually only gets worse, and most doctors don't know anything about it, and give the wrong treatment, etc...

So then I had fear added to my depression, and when I said my affirmation I actually was in depression and fear. That's why it didn't work! I finally realized that if I'm not getting out of depression and fear it will never improve. So I cleared up my mind, put depression and fear behind me, and started thinking about health and that my whole body is healthy and in order. And my eye started to improve quickly! Now my eye is almost completely healed and I continue to think how much in order and healthy my body is. I definitely know that this disease will NEVER come back to me again!

Here is my original question:

Hi John. Twelve days ago I got an iritis in my left eye. This is a rare autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks your eye for no apparent reason. I was put on hourly eye drops and it started to improve slowly; the doctor said it would take about two weeks. As my vision was really foggy in the left eye, I decided to speed up the recovery with mind power, so I started to repeat in my mind that "every minute and every hour my eye is getting better and better," and I did this the rest of the day. However on the next day the result was the exact opposite; my eye turned from improving to really bad, so that my doctor had to give me an injection in the eye to get this under control.

Here is my question - could it be possible that my eye turned worse because of my suggestion?

As the disease is caused by the immune system going crazy, maybe my immune system thought it's doing good to the eye by attacking it, and attacked it even more after my suggestion? Is it possible that suggestions can be misunderstood by the body?

I've used suggestions before and never gotten negative results like this. I even got rid of my migraine headaches a few years ago after reading your book MIND POWER Into the 21st Century and discovering mind power.

A Thanks for sharing your experience. These will be valuable insights for others who mistakenly work with fear and depression. Always work with the highest quality thoughts and monitor your attitudes and feelings. Well done discovering this for yourself.

Q My wife and I both work for a multinational insurance company, and we both have very difficult sales/team targets. We are both interested in behavioural coaching and have found your site inspirational. Our "old" way of encouraging our teams to achieve their targets hasn't been working for some time now, but we have lately been talking about self talk and success vibrations. We have now turned our target on its head and we talk now about "personal goals," whatever they may be. Needless to say, our team's performance has improved dramatically, and other teams are asking us why? I'm wondering how you would overcome someone who is very negative to these ideas?

England

A Skeptical people usually come around when they see others around them getting results. I usually joke in my seminars that the sceptics become my biggest fans. Why? Because they are so surprised when it works for them. Having said this, the fact is that Mind Power is not for everybody. Some people simply aren't open to it and don't want anything to do with it. You can introduce the concepts to them, but if they aren't receptive then there is really little you can do. Sad, because it's their loss.

Q On your Healing Yourself CD, you say, "You don't have to do anything but put yourself in harmony with it." It's unclear to me what we should put ourselves in harmony with. Is it "health" or "life force?"

East Northport, USA

A This is an excellent question, as it illustrates how we should do our Mind Power exercises. That which is most powerful for you is what you should use. The unseen forces of the universe are responsive to our thoughts and intentions, and will respond to what "feels right" to us. Which feels more appropriate for you, health or life force? Either will work equally well, or you could use both, or even alternate them in different sessions. The point is to relax in knowing that it is working for you. This is to be in harmony with it.

Q John, you say in your book that "the mistake most people make is trying to change conditions and circumstances by working directly with those conditions and circumstances." I would appreciate it if you could elaborate on this, maybe with a few examples of these conditions and circumstances.

Gauteng, South Africa

A What I mean by this is that trying to work hard to be a success by just working hard and not visualizing positive outcomes or doing other Mind Power exercises is limiting yourself. Similarly, trying to win a sporting event by just training your body and not preparing your mind to nurture positive expectations and confidence is again limiting yourself. You must work both mentally with your thoughts and physically with your actions in order to maximize your potential. Most people don't do this, and as a result they are not nearly as successful as they could be.
