Q: I am a counsellor and work voluntarily at a drug & alcohol rehabilitation centre. I also have a private practice. I seem to have people coming to me for help, but they cannot afford to pay. I never turn them away, but I still have to pay my rent and expenses. I trust my higher power but wonder where I am going wrong, as two months have gone by with no income. After using the power of the mind and overcoming alcohol addiction myself and turning my life around, I know I am able to help others and frequently recommend your books and watch it turn their lives around also. I want to continue this work but feel I am going wrong somewhere. I will just add I am 61 years old.
A: You can only help people when you have helped yourself as well. You mention that you have a rehabilitation centre and also a private practice. What I would do is begin programming to be tremendously successful, earning lots of money in my private practice. From your abundance, then you have the ability of helping and assisting other people. You're absolutely right in your compassion not to turn anybody away. However, you must distinguish between your working time and your contributing to others' time. And you can only contribute to others when you are indeed financially successful and able to support yourself and making a good income. This is not being selfish. This will make you more effective. So learn to distinguish between the two and begin programming your mind to have an incredibly successful practice so that you can give to other people.
Q: I have a problem where I know what is right and what is wrong, but I can’t commit myself to any decision.
A: Being indecisive is a problem for many people, so you’re not alone. However it can be easily overcome with Mind Power. What I would suggest you do is to use affirmations and visualizations to correct the situation. First affirm daily that you are decisive and make decisions easily. Also visualize yourself in situations where decisions are called for and you feel the initial impulse toward being indecisive, and then you overcome it with a decision. This is the Mind Power part, but you must also follow through with action. Challenge yourself to make decisions every day. Harness the power of your subconscious and intuition to help you. Become the vision you are projecting in your mind. If you truly want to be decisive and you follow a daily program of Mind Power you will become what you project.
Q: I'm always wondering about astrology and birth dates, especially when I read the birth date books about how personalities and destiny are controlled by Karma or birth date energies. I read about one date where this person is faithful, will have heartbreaks from love before finding a happy loving relationship. So does that mean that this person is destined to have losses in love relationships first, that it's somehow a must and can't be changed, or that it’s hard to change? Say they affirm to themselves that they are attracting a loyal partner, a happy relationship. Can they succeed in avoiding the heartache when they are born on that date?
California, USA
A: While I respect some aspects of astrology and there is no question in my mind that the stars do in certain ways have some influence over us, what you read in the daily newspapers and magazines is nothing more than harmless fiction, fun to read but of no relevance whatsoever. Think about it. There are seven billion people on the planet. Divide that by 365 days in the year and you get approximately twenty million people per day. Are all those twenty million lucky with finances or unlucky in love just because they were born on the same day? I know of two sisters who are twins; their lives in no way resemble one another in money or love.
Destiny is created by your thoughts and actions. Only a fool would let a horoscope influence their lives, but remember that placebos work and if you read something and believe it, it will have an effect. So my advice is to believe all the positive stuff and disregard the negative. Or maybe just read it as a fun piece of fiction.
Q: I would like to know if this is an appropriate goal. You like someone (a specific person) and you would like to be with that person and have a relationship with them. Can you use mind power for that?
Chicago, USA
A: Relationships are always harder to affect because they involve someone else's life as well as your own. You can never use Mind Power in a situation that infringes upon someone's free will. Having said that, if you feel an attraction and the other person is single and available, why not use Mind Power? It will only help to create what you yourself desire. Study the situation as to whether it feels right to use Mind Power in this particular circumstance or not, and if it feels right, go for it.
Q: Thank you very much for this website and the work you've been doing throughout these years. It has been helping me to produce real good results, and I have completely changed my lifestyle.
My question: Can Mind Power help me correct my eyesight?
Sterlitamak, Russia
A: Why not? If you’re getting results in other areas of your life, it shows that you understand the techniques, and most importantly that you are practicing them. Whatever the mind can conceive of and believe it can achieve.
Q: I am curious about the "The Secret" and your Mind Power means. Is it possible for you to please explain what is so different or similar about these two processes? And which one would you consider better?
Johannesburg, South Africa
A: The Secret is a phenomenally successful book and film that introduces people to the principle "What you focus on you attract." I have not read the book but I have seen the film and agree with everything it says.
Mind Power also teaches that what you focus on you attract, but what it does in addition (and this is crucial) is give you techniques to help you direct your mind. Mind Power is very technique- oriented and gives the individual a workable system to help them create their reality. Anyone who has read or seen The Secret will want to take the next step and practice Mind Power.
Q: After a year of repeated synchronicities involving the concept of abundance (some of which have been so miraculous they have reduced me to tears!), I have found myself recognizing that I have been my own block in my life. To be honest, I have always been very spiritual, but the energy coming to me of late is saying, “What do you desire?” I understand now that I have limited myself hugely in the past in many areas of my life and the physical result was a complete reflection of my inner self. Anyway, my question is, do I just visualize and be open to receiving? I also believe I have been asked to clear my limiting beliefs, but I’m talking about a lot of them! How long, if I’m vigilant, does it take?
Auckland, New Zealand
A: Every thought and every action you take has an effect in your life. Your taking responsibility for what is happening in your life and making a decision to change it is a huge step. This in itself will have an effect.
Here is what I advise you to do. Firstly, decide what type of person you want to become and what situations you want to experience in your life. Secondly, set up a Mind Power program to create that. Visualization is just one technique. Why limit yourself to just one? This website is filled with information to guide you. I might also suggest that you check out the CD Setting Up a Mind Power Program.
How long will it take? If you’re vigilant and do your exercises regularly, you will start seeing some changes within weeks. This does not mean that your life suddenly becomes perfect, but bit-by-bit you will become the person you envision, and the circumstances you’re projecting will manifest for you. Whether it is weeks or months or even years (for large goals) does not matter. What you want to see are changes that reflect your new mental images.
Q: I love your website. I like what I read but to put into practice what I read is difficult.
Merliott, El Salvador
A: You are absolutely right, to practice what you read is difficult. Most people think that it is easy doing Mind Power, that anyone can do exercises for twenty to thirty minutes a day. How simple and easy! Yes, simple and easy in theory, but to practice it daily for ninety days takes discipline, watchfulness, commitment to the work, surmounting inertia and procrastination, and much more. You have to be dedicated to do Mind Power.
So to know this is a wonderful realization. Now the questions are, "How important is it for you to create your life using Mind Power?" and, "Are you willing to do the work?" Your actions will supply the answers. This website has everything you need to start you on this path.
Q: I listened to you speak on the morning of Tuesday August 7th in Vancouver, and thoroughly enjoyed what you had to say. I bought and read Mind Power Into the 21st Century, and I have one nagging question, maybe something I'm not quite understanding. The section on scarcity consciousness definitely hit home for me. I am always saying, "I can't afford this." Now if I change that to "I can afford this," isn't it possible that this could lead to building up debt?
I really would like to say I can afford to go to Australia next spring to visit relatives who will be there on sabbatical, but knowing my current financial obligations ... I want to say that's not realistic, despite what you say about the cause of our own reality. You can see I'm having trouble breaking out of this box. Should I say, "I can afford the trip," and just put the trip on my credit card and then do the imprinting exercise etc, and hope that by the time the bill comes due I will have manifested the money? I certainly believe that one day I will be financially independent. I'm not close now though.
A: This is an excellent question and I'm glad you asked it, as it will clear up some misunderstanding for not only you but many of our readers. Saying to yourself, "I can't afford this," or "I can't afford that," is reinforcing scarcity consciousness. It is building a vibration of lack within you. And it is factually false. Many things you want you could obtain if, as you suggested, you put it on your credit card, or sold your home or car and liquidated all your assets, took out a loan - there are many, many things you can in fact afford, and it is good to know that. I'm not suggesting this is what you do, as it would not be a prudent move, but the fact is you could if you chose to do so, and that's the key word - choice.
A better way of approaching that matter would be to say to yourself, "I could have that if I want but I choose not." That way the power is with you and you create a prosperity consciousness rather than a scarcity consciousness. I suggest you read my past topic of the month "Choices" Parts I and II.
Q: Some say to let go of the wish, once it has been visualized, in order for the energy to make it happen, and that too much thinking about it doesn't help, as the energy cannot flow freely. Others say that the more you focus on your goal, the more likely it will happen ("Where thought goes, energy flows," "You get what you focus on...") So is it better to visualize my goal once or twice a day and let go, or visualize it also whenever the thought comes to my mind?
France
A: This is an excellent question. I feel that it is important that everyone understand it and that's why I have chosen to answer this question. Trying to focus on your goal and visualizing every moment of every day can in many ways be counterproductive. Through my work with mind powers over twenty-two years now, I have found that it is actually more effective to spend shorter amounts of time focusing and visualizing on what it is that you want.
It is better to do your visualizations once or twice a day and put a lot of energy, a lot of feeling into it - losing yourself in those visualizations. Seeing and feeling yourself as having or doing what it is that you want. Maybe do it for five minutes or ten minutes.
But then when you finish, let go of it. Don't try and hang onto those images all the time. Just let go of them. Now if the images naturally come to your mind, then that's fine. But don't try to force them. Don't try to defend your position. Just simply allow whatever the mind, whatever thoughts come to the mind, allow them to happen.
It is infinitely more valuable to have consistency, and consistency comes from doing the visualization regularly over a longer period of time. Thirty, sixty, ninety days. So it's not how much you do each day but the fact that you do it regularly day after day that is important.
Q: Assuming we [my wife and I] have the same goals (better relationship and prosperity), how do we work your program together?
Stone Mountain, Georgia
A: Two people working on the same program magnifies the result many-fold. It is wonderful when a husband and wife, or two or more people in a business context begin adopting and applying these principles. The first thing to establish is that both of you truly want the goal, that it's not just one person dominating the other with his or her wishes. Once this is established, decide what exercises you're going to do and how much time each day will be spent doing them. Keep notes and check in with each other at least once a week. Some exercises, like affirmations, can be done together by saying them out loud simultaneously. But many exercises, like visualizations, are done separately. Nevertheless, when the goal is the same, shared visualizations will magnify the effect. You also will have different cycles - see question 4 - and can therefore motivate each other at different times. Great success to both of you.
Q: Hello John. Well, I am a lucky person. I am married to a wonderful wife and having another child after 20 years married for the second time. The question I would like to ask is this: I have found my passion in life - my own business in renting out fish tanks and everything else to do with tropical fish - but it seems to be so hard to get it off the ground, even with my affirmations and visualizations every day. And as much as I do this, sometimes I wonder if I am going in the right direction. If you truly desire something that gets your heart going (i.e., seeing other people's reactions and expressions after you have installed a fish tank) why doesn't it flow a lot smoother, or is it because deep down beliefs of not succeeding are hindering your path?
Rotura, New Zealand
A: It's always difficult answering a question like this when there are so many unknowns, like how long have you been doing your visualizations and affirmations. A month? Six months? Two years? I would give different answers to each situation. Let's assume you've been doing it for quite a while. Obviously something more is needed.
Are you being creative enough in your thinking (see the Creativity chapter in Mind Power Into the 21st Century)? Are your ideas and actions innovative? How have you been trying to market your products and service? Let's get creative.
You mention deep down beliefs "of not succeeding." Why do you suspect they're there? Maybe affirm some new beliefs about success. Remember, your success helps many people--your failure helps no one.
Try new strategies and new approaches, and if you still don't get any results, stop the exercises. If you've been doing them for two years and it's not happening, stop. Many times, I've seen people achieve what they want after they've stopped. It's as if the pressure is off and in this relaxed state all the previous momentum carries right on through. I hope this helps. As I said, I had to guess at some of your details.
Q: John - Thank you for a wonderful book. I heard you interviewed on Connecting Point on KYPA Radio in Los Angeles and had to get your book immediately, which I did, and I am now turbo charging the changes in my thinking that I've been working on for the past five years! My question - Have you found it is more effective to repeat fewer affirmations more frequently, or more less frequently? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, and I am telling everyone I know (who is awake!!) about you and your book. Thank you again, and I wish you lots of continued success. I look forward to your topics each month.
Southern California
A: The mind likes variety. Doing the same affirmation over and over again can become boring. Yet, if you have too many, you lose the impact and benefits of the repetition factor. Choose two or three affirmations to do in any given week. You will find this most effective. See the following question from Dunedin, New Zealand. And thanks for the support. Letting people know about the book is how a grass roots movement begins. We are all helping to change the consciousness of ourselves and others by practicing this method. I'm glad the book is in your hands.
