Q I grew up in a violent home. I withdrew emotionally. Now I can't make friends; I haven't had any for 15 years. I can't maintain a romantic relationship because I somehow pick men who are emotionally unavailable to me. I have an attitude of self-pity and negativity. Do you think it is possible to turn my life around and change my personality to a more positive one?
A Why not? It seems that you know what your issues are and how they developed. This is excellent. Too often we don't understand why unfortunate situations happen to us. You are very honest and brave in sharing your appraisal of yourself. This is very encouraging. You say, "I have an attitude of self-pity and negativity." These attitudes direct your daily thoughts and what you mostly focus upon. Of course you attract situations that match these images. You are successfully using Mind Power, except that you're using it in reverse.
It is unfortunate that you grew up in a violent home and withdrew emotionally; however each of us has our own personal cross to bear. We cannot let our past sabotage us for the rest of our lives. Radical change is called for and that change is in your thinking. Can you turn your life around and become more positive? Of course, and you can achieve greater things than just that. You can create an amazing life for yourself and have a fabulous successful relationship using Mind Power. It won't happen magically or overnight. You are called upon to create new beliefs to imprint into your subconscious, and you will have to be vigilant to avoid falling back into your old negative ways, but you can do that. Set yourself up a daily Mind Power Program and stick to it, acknowledging yourself regularly for every positive step you take. You have discovered this website, and if you practice and follow this system it will make dramatic positive changes for you. Have fun and I'm happy for you.
Q I cannot apply myself. I do set goals but cannot achieve the desired results because I procrastinate. I really want to know how to stop this attitude as it is affecting me physically, socially and careerwise. Also I want to learn how to harness the power of my mind. HELP!
A Your second question is, "How do I harness the power of my mind?" This website is devoted to teaching you all you need to know to become proficient at the practice. Now let's address the first question about procrastination. Procrastination is the number one reason people do not succeed in their goals. Almost everyone has good intentions, but acting upon these intentions with a plan, a vision and the daily practice of Mind Power is not the norm. It's good to know that most people fall into the trap of procrastination, so don't beat yourself up about it. You're doing what most people do. But don't be satisfied with living and acting like most people. Why not be extraordinary and proactive and do great things this year? Overcoming procrastination begins with choice. I would like you and all other visitors to this site that procrastinate to read this month's Topic of the Month and apply what I suggest. If you do you will be well on your way to a new you and therefore a new life, a life that reflects your new thoughts and habits. Have a great year.
Q Dear Mr. Kehoe! I'm absolutely amazed by your books. I started working daily not long ago, but can see some results already. Thank you very much. I believe your methods can change my life completely. My question is the following: since early childhood I've been very afraid of deep water. As a result, I cannot swim properly and I panic when in water. I understand that it's too deep for me and that I cannot just stand on my feet at any moment. I began practicing visualizations, as you advise. I imagine myself swimming in deep water for long distances, diving (which I never did before), feeling absolutely free of fear and relaxed. May I hope that, when the summer season begins, I'll do this in reality?
A Overcoming our fears, which are really just emotionalized thoughts, is one of the rewards of practicing Mind Power regularly. I'm glad you have access to my books and this website. I look forward to hearing from you this summer.
Q How do I join the ninety-day club?
A This month's topic encourages everyone who regularly reads this website to join the Ninety-Day Club. You become an automatic member by doing your Mind Power exercises every day for ninety days without missing a day. Sounds simple enough, but not so easy to put into practice. To do this requires will, determination and overcoming procrastination and distraction. Are you up for it?
Q This website is heaven itself... Can Mind Power help with sleeping problems?
A Without knowing your particular problem, let me say that Mind Power can help you in many ways with your sleeping issues. First of all, most of the time when we have difficulty sleeping, it is because our mind is too busy with thoughts. And often these thoughts are negative, giving us stress and causing us to worry. So my first suggestion to you is that, when you go to bed, focus your mind on all the positive aspects of your life, leaving you feeling nourished. You can also use a favourite affirmation; something general that relaxes you and puts positive suggestions in your mind. Something like, "Everyday in every way I'm getting better and better," or "Good things happen to me regularly and consistently." You want to feel calm and relaxed, so use your thoughts to enhance this experience. Also you can use this time to do some of your Mind Power exercises. During the day you might want to affirm, "I sleep soundly and wake up refreshed." Imprint what it is you want into your subconscious and it will do the rest.
Q I have read and re-read Mind Power Into the 21st Century and believe it is the best book ever! Being a Christian, I am comfortable with the concepts in the book, as they affirm a number of basic concepts in the Bible.
My question: I have just (2 days ago i.e., I have not even been called in for an interview yet (hoping I will be short-listed) applied for a position outside my current place of employment. This is a position "senior" to my current status in terms of salary and responsibility, but not outside my scope of experience. In other words, I believe I am suitable.
My understanding of Mind Power in this case is to visualize myself in the interview and the new position (visualization and affirmations). What else can I do to position myself for success in this case? I really want this position!
A You prepare yourself for success by visualizing and affirming what you want, which you have been doing. You also create empowering beliefs, a success vibration and a host of other inner activities to direct your thoughts towards the desired outcome. The most fundamental law of Mind Power is that you attract what you focus on. Focus on success and you attract success. Focus on and worry about failure and you attract failure. Be vigilant in directing your thoughts and you will have what you focus upon. However, within this law there can be many twists and turns in the plot before the desired outcome manifests for us. It is not always a perfectly straight line that takes us to where we want to go. So if you do not get this particular job after doing your exercises (which is possible), you continue working with your thoughts in a creative way to manifest something even greater.
Q In many of your books you suggest sentences for affirmations. What are your thoughts around single words as affirmations, like 'success' or 'confidence'?
A Your question is a good one. I always advise to keep affirmations simple, at maximum one sentence. However using a phrase or word can be equally if not more powerful. The key is that the affirmation becomes a mantra and imprints upon your subconscious. So using just a single word can have a very powerful effect.
