Monthly Mind Power Questions & Answers

July 2008

Q

Hello and greetings from Florida. John, first of all I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge of Mind Power with all of us. I'm trying to use the principles of Mind Power to overcome a problem that I have, which is stuttering. I've taken lots of therapies already, but none of them seem to work for me. Everyone has told me that there is no cure for this problem, but I believe that the solution to this issue is hidden inside my mind. What Mind Power exercise do you recommend me to use for this problem?

A

We have had excellent results in helping people cure their stuttering. You use the same techniques and methods that you would for any other goal that you wish to achieve. The following is a recent email we received from one of our students, Charles Sperling, of Vancouver:

I attended John Kehoe’s Mind Power Seminar 18 years ago, and by implementing the practices in the Mind Power Program I was able to overcome a lifelong habit of stuttering.  It was during the second week of the course that John’s words truly resonated for me:  “If you aren’t going to do the exercises then don’t bother coming - there’s no point in paying for the course, attending and not doing the exercises - you just won’t achieve results.”

At that point I decided that what I needed to overcome was a lack of confidence. I began with this, but after the 2nd week realized that what I really needed to do was overcome my stuttering. I began visualizing myself speaking in front of audiences of about 500 people. I saw myself speaking with dynamics, using my hands, my body, my voice, my facial expressions. I got everything involved. At first it was difficult and my mind would wander, but I always brought myself back. I didn’t think I was getting anywhere.

For about a month, I never, never, never missed a day. It became a survival technique. As John said, “It’s like having to pump air into an air chamber to survive.”  I recognized that if I was going to get over this, to survive, I absolutely had to do the visualizations. After another month everything became crystal clear. I could see, hear, and smell the environment I had created: the people, the colours, everything – I was really there. Moreover, I felt confident and it was a wonderful place to be.

After about 3 months of visualizing, I unexpectedly found myself having to speak to an audience of 40 to 50 parents, rather than the one individual that I thought I would be speaking with. Breaking into a sweat, all my former fears came up, and I wondered how I could run away? I then closed my eyes in total fear of the situation I was in; and in that moment I saw myself in my visualization standing in front of 500 people, and I started speaking. When I opened my eyes, my visualization stayed with me; I saw not 50 people but 500. I was behind the podium, speaking fluently and with passion. It was only after my talk that I realized that I hadn’t stuttered once.  And it was then that I realized that I didn’t have to stutter ever again; it’s not who I am. I overcame a lifelong habit, and since then have given numerous talks, without a stutter.

Q

Hi, I am a varsity student living in South Africa. I just wanted to say that Mind Power is my second bible; it keeps me motivated, happy, confident and mostly positive. I think I have read the book more than 20 times, and each time I learn something new, or I improve in certain areas of my life. Thanx a lot. May God give you more power to change people's lives for the best.

You emphasise the importance of practice in your book, does that mean that we have to practice all the aspects of Mind Power every day, or does one have to choose one that is most important for them at the time?

A

You design a daily program that works for you. If you were to do every technique that I teach for five minutes each day, it would take you hours, and this is not practical. I suggest between twenty and thrity minutes a day as an ideal amount of time to practice Mind Power. This is more than enough to get excellent results, and yet does not take too much time from your day. I like to choose a weekly schedule, picking what exercises to do week by week. Some weeks the exercises stay the same and other weeks they change, but the important thing is that every day I am doing some exercises. They all build and support one another. The goals you are working on stay the same, but the exercises vary. It's equally important to have fun with it and go with the exercises that feel right for you.

Q

Lately I have been listening to music while I was visualizing. I have the sense that strong, emotional pictures develop even better inside of me while listening to music that inspires me. What do you think about this issue? Do you think it could distract from my visualisations? Or do you think it can be good to use music as a supportive tool? I'm a bit confused about this because so far I have never read about visualization in combination with music.

A

Trust what works for you. I am deeply interested in the effect music has on our consciousness, and am doing a lot of research on it. We all know the old saying that says, "music stirs the soul," and there is no doubt that it can have a profound effect on us. Music that inspires you can be very beneficial while doing your exercises, but it should be instrumental only. If there are words in the music, the words will clutter the exercise, as the mind gets confused as to what it is focusing on. This is not to stop you from listening to inspiring music and words at a different time, but when doing your exercises pick music without words.

Q

Mr. Kehoe, you are a legend! Let me offer you my heartfelt thanks personally for creating a marvelous and unique system which not only one can understand easily, but also one can adopt quickly and above all have a total satisfaction that everything exists within the system. I would be delighted if I could meet you in person so that I can eloborate my feelings. Would be delighted to get personal mail or e-mail from you. Thanks.

How can I contribute to bringing about more awareness of Mind Power?

A

Thanks for your comments. I am commited to getting this information out to as many people as possible, and have dedicated myself to this purpose. That is why I write books, record CDs, do public talks and host this website. You can help in two ways. First by turning people on to this website, perhaps by sending them one of the Mind Power Articles or just talking to them about it. Word of mouth is the best way of this website spreading. Secondly, practice Mind Power and get really good at it. When you can demonstrate its effect, those close to you will be keenly interested in learning what is working for you. My thoughts are with you and I'm glad I've received your email. Now you have one from me and, who knows, maybe we will meet some time in the future. All the best.

Q

Are you sure that this text is right on your website? How to Be a Good Receiver – John Kehoe discusses the notion of how most people are taught that it is better to give than receive. Kehoe explains how this is false, and that it is better to give AND receive.  ??? Or am I just reading it wrong?

A

Receiving is just as important as giving. Too much emphasis is placed on giving; my experience in teaching for over thirty years is that most of us are already very good givers, but we remain very poor receivers. We need to realize that it is good to receive. It is good to allow life to give us the things we desire. It is good to feel happy. It is good to enjoy friendship. None of this is possible if you are uncomfortable with receiving. So one must learn to balance giving and receiving. Some of us must learn to give more and be more generous, but most of us must learn to receive more. We do this by believing that we are worthy, worthy of having the best that life can give us. We must give AND receive. Hope this helps you.

Q

I am a deeply spiritual person and believe in your teachings wholeheartedly; however, I've read in other spiritual books on Hinduism that we all have a store of karma from previous lifetimes that needs to be worked out, both good and bad. Doesn't the Law of Karma, which is inescapable, override the Mind Power techniques? Surely an individual has to have some sort of responsibility for their actions, both good and bad, in this or some former lifetime? I am quite perplexed, because I have been made to understand that the Law of Karma is inexorable, and now you and so many world-renowned speakers say that the Law of Attraction (thought power) is the ultimate.

A

It is very easy to get confused, especially when different systems teach different truths. What is one to do? Simply trust what resonates as truth for you. From a Mind Power perspective, we do not take into account karma from past lifetimes for the simple reason that no one knows for sure whether we have had past lifetimes. We do know absolutely that we have this life, and that our thoughts and actions (karma) from this life affect what happens to us. I feel you are on far more solid footing working just with the reality of this life. Too often people use past lives to explain away some difficulty that they are presently having. I think in many ways this is a convenient way of not taking responsibility for what is happening to you. Trust the power you have in this life to make changes and create your reality.

Q

There is a conscious mind and a subconscious mind, but does an unconscious mind exist, or is it the subconscious mind?

A

Different systems use different terms. The subconscious mind and the unconscious mind are the same thing.

Q

I read your book and now many things have become much clearer to me, because now I know that I am the only person who is responsible for what happens in my life, and this gave me a really strong hope that I'll be happy (I had a long depression before). After reading your book "Mind Power," I look at everything in positive ways, and things become better! I am also trying to achieve my goals using the subconscious, though I do not know the results of my efforts yet. I think that I made some mistakes, so I have two questions:

1. I used affirmations in the future tense, for example "I will get to the university," but every time I added the date, for example, "before fall 2008." Is this still effective, or do I have to start the 90 days all over again?

2. Doing my 90 days I missed a few, but every time I missed, I spent more time than usual on affirmations the next day. Does this mean that I failed and it's not going to work? I know you receive a lot of letters, but I hope you will be able to answer mine. Thank you very much.

A

If you need to achieve something by a certain date, then by all means add it to your affirmation. Missing a few days here and there does not nullify all the work you have done. It sounds like you are doing everything right. Keep up the good work.
